2006-06-20[SPARC]: Kill __irq_itoa().David S. Miller
This ugly hack was long overdue to die. It was a way to print out Sparc interrupts in a more freindly format, since IRQ numbers were arbitrary opaque 32-bit integers which vectored into PIL levels. These 32-bit integers were not necessarily in the 0-->NR_IRQS range, but the PILs they vectored to were. The idea now is that we will increase NR_IRQS a little bit and use a virtual<-->real IRQ number mapping scheme similar to PowerPC. That makes this IRQ printing hack irrelevant, and furthermore only a handful of drivers actually used __irq_itoa() making it even less useful. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2006-04-11[PATCH] No arch-specific strpbrk implementationsKyle McMartin
While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. Todo items: - IRQ_INPROGRESS flag - use sparc64 irq buckets, or generic irq_desc? - sun4d - re-indent large chunks of sun4m_smp.c - some places assume sequential cpu numbering (i.e. 0,1 instead of 0,2) Last I checked (with 2.6.14), random programs segfault with dual HyperSPARC. And with SuperSPARC II's, it seems stable but will eventually die from a write lock error (wrong lock owner or something). 2005-09-10[PATCH] spinlock consolidationIngo Molnar
This patch (written by me and also containing many suggestions of Arjan van de Ven) does a major cleanup of the spinlock code. It does the following things: - consolidates and enhances the spinlock/rwlock debugging code - simplifies the asm/spinlock.h files - encapsulates the raw spinlock type and moves generic spinlock features (such as ->break_lock) into the generic code. - cleans up the spinlock code hierarchy to get rid of the spaghetti. Most notably there's now only a single variant of the debugging code, located in lib/spinlock_debug.c. (previously we had one SMP debugging variant per architecture, plus a separate generic one for UP builds) Also, i've enhanced the rwlock debugging facility, it will now track write-owners. There is new spinlock-owner/CPU-tracking on SMP builds too. All locks have lockup detection now, which will work for both soft and hard spin/rwlock lockups. The arch-level include files now only contain the minimally necessary subset of the spinlock code - all the rest that can be generalized now lives in the generic headers: include/asm-i386/spinlock_types.h | 16 include/asm-x86_64/spinlock_types.h | 16 I have also split up the various spinlock variants into separate files, making it easier to see which does what. I did not try to build non-SMP kernels. That should be trivial to fix up later if necessary. I converted bit ops atomic_hash lock to raw_spinlock_t. Doing so avoids some ugly nesting of linux/*.h and asm/*.h files. Those particular locks are well tested and contained entirely inside arch specific code. I do NOT expect any new issues to arise with them. If someone does ever need to use debug/metrics with them, then they will need to unravel this hairball between spinlocks, atomic ops, and bit ops that exist only because parisc has exactly one atomic instruction: LDCW (load and clear word). 2005-08-19[SPARC]: Fix weak aliasesAl Viro
sparc_ksyms.c used to declare weak alias to several gcc intrinsics. It doesn't work with gcc4 anymore - it wants a declaration for the thing we are aliasing to and that's not going to happen for something like .mul, etc. Replaced with direct injection of weak alias on the assembler level - .weak <alias> followed by <alias> = <aliased>; that works on all gcc versions. The sparc32 ksyms is missing a few more symbols, these are primarily related to SMP, and will be needed as SMP gets beaten back into functionality. Specifically, add __cpu_data (PER_CPU), cpu_online_map, and phys_cpu_present_map. This patch assumes that the earlier "linux-2.6.11-sparc-fixksyms.patch" is applied, otherwise, it will apply with fuzz. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
