2013-05-08ACPI / thermal: do not always return THERMAL_TREND_RAISING for active trip ↵Zhang Rui
points commit 94a409319561ec1847fd9bf996a2d5843ad00932 upstream. Commit 4ae46be "Thermal: Introduce thermal_zone_trip_update()" introduced a regression causing the fan to be always on even when the system is idle. My original idea in that commit is that: - when the current temperature is above the trip point, keep the fan on, even if the temperature is dropping. - when the current temperature is below the trip point, turn on the fan when the temperature is raising, turn off the fan when the temperature is dropping. But this is what the code actually does: - when the current temperature is above the trip point, the fan keeps on. - when the current temperature is below the trip point, the fan is always on because thermal_get_trend() in driver/acpi/thermal.c returns THERMAL_TREND_RAISING. Thus the fan keeps running even if the system is idle. Fix this in drivers/acpi/thermal.c. 2013-05-08ACPI: Fix wrong parameter passed to memblock_reserveWang YanQing
commit a6432ded299726f123b93d0132fead200551535c upstream. Commit 53aac44 (ACPI: Store valid ACPI tables passed via early initrd in reserved memblock areas) introduced acpi_initrd_override() that passes a wrong value as the second argument to memblock_reserve(). Namely, the second argument of memblock_reserve() is the size of the region, not the address of the top of it, so make acpi_initrd_override() pass the size in there as appropriate. 2013-05-08PCI / ACPI: Don't query OSC support with all possible controlsYinghai Lu
commit 545d6e189a41c94c11f55045a771118eccc9d9eb upstream. Found problem on system that firmware that could handle pci aer. Firmware get error reporting after pci injecting error, before os boots. But after os boots, firmware can not get report anymore, even pci=noaer is passed. Root cause: BIOS _OSC has problem with query bit checking. It turns out that BIOS vendor is copying example code from ACPI Spec. In ACPI Spec 5.0, page 290: If (Not(And(CDW1,1))) // Query flag clear? { // Disable GPEs for features granted native control. If (And(CTRL,0x01)) // Hot plug control granted? { Store(0,HPCE) // clear the hot plug SCI enable bit Store(1,HPCS) // clear the hot plug SCI status bit } ... } When Query flag is set, And(CDW1,1) will be 1, Not(1) will return 0xfffffffe. So it will get into code path that should be for control set only. BIOS acpi code should be changed to "If (LEqual(And(CDW1,1), 0)))" Current kernel code is using _OSC query to notify firmware about support from OS and then use _OSC to set control bits. During query support, current code is using all possible controls. So will execute code that should be only for control set stage. That will have problem when pci=noaer or aer firmware_first is used. As firmware have that control set for os aer already in query support stage, but later will not os aer handling. We should avoid passing all possible controls, just use osc_control_set instead. That should workaround BIOS bugs with affected systems on the field as more bios vendors are copying sample code from ACPI spec. Conflicts: drivers/acpi/pci_root.c This commit broke some pre-1.1 PCIe devices by leaving them with ASPM enabled. Previously, we had disabled ASPM on these devices because many of them don't implement it correctly (per 149e1637). Requesting _OSC control early means that aspm_disabled may be set before we scan the PCI bus and configure link ASPM state. But the ASPM configuration currently skips the check for pre-PCIe 1.1 devices when aspm_disabled is set, like this: acpi_pci_root_add acpi_pci_osc_support if (flags != base_flags) pcie_no_aspm aspm_disabled = 1 pci_acpi_scan_root ... pcie_aspm_init_link_state pcie_aspm_sanity_check if (!aspm_disabled) /* check for pre-PCIe 1.1 device */ Therefore, setting aspm_disabled early means that we leave ASPM enabled on these pre-PCIe 1.1 devices, which is a regression for some devices. The best fix would be to clean up the ASPM init so we can evaluate _OSC before scanning the bug (that way boot-time and hot-add discovery will work the same), but that requires significant rework. commit 33f767d767e9a684e9cd60704d4c049a2014c8d5 upstream. Observe that acpi_get_child() doesn't need to use the helper struct acpi_find_child structure and change it to work without it. Also, using acpi_get_object_info() to get the output of _ADR for the given device is overkill, because that function does much more than just evaluating _ADR (let alone the additional memory allocation done by it). Moreover, acpi_get_child() doesn't need to loop any more once it has found a matching handle, so make it stop in that case. Finding a suitable memory area to store the modified table(s) has been taken over from arch/x86/kernel/setup.c and makes use of max_low_pfn_mapped: memblock_find_in_range(0, max_low_pfn_mapped,...) This one is X86 specific. It may not be hard to extend this functionality for other ACPI aware architectures if there is need for. 2013-01-30efi: Make 'efi_enabled' a function to query EFI facilitiesMatt Fleming
Originally 'efi_enabled' indicated whether a kernel was booted from EFI firmware. Over time its semantics have changed, and it now indicates whether or not we are booted on an EFI machine with bit-native firmware, e.g. 64-bit kernel with 64-bit firmware. The immediate motivation for this patch is the bug report at, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1040557 which details how running a platform driver on an EFI machine that is designed to run under BIOS can cause the machine to become bricked. Also, the following report, https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47121 details how running said driver can also cause Machine Check Exceptions. Drivers need a new means of detecting whether they're running on an EFI machine, as sadly the expression, if (!efi_enabled) hasn't been a sufficient condition for quite some time. Users actually want to query 'efi_enabled' for different reasons - what they really want access to is the list of available EFI facilities. For instance, the x86 reboot code needs to know whether it can invoke the ResetSystem() function provided by the EFI runtime services, while the ACPI OSL code wants to know whether the EFI config tables were mapped successfully. There are also checks in some of the platform driver code to simply see if they're running on an EFI machine (which would make it a bad idea to do BIOS-y things). This patch is a prereq for the samsung-laptop fix patch. 2013-01-22ACPI: Check MSR valid bit before using P-state frequenciesStefan Bader
To fix incorrect P-state frequencies which can happen on some AMD systems f594065faf4f9067c2283a34619fc0714e79a98d "ACPI: Add fixups for AMD P-state figures" introduced a quirk to obtain the correct values by reading from AMD specific MSRs. This did cause a regression when running a kernel using that quirk under Xen which does (currently) not pass through MSR reads to the HW. Instead the guest gets a 0 in return. And this seems to cause a failure to initialize the ondemand governour (hard to say for sure as all P-states appear to run at the same frequency). While this should also be fixed in the hypervisor (to allow a guest to read that MSR), this patch is intended to work around the issue in the meantime. In discussion it turned out that indeed real HW/BIOSes may choose to not set the valid bit and thus mark the P-state as invalid. So this could be considered a fix for broken BIOSes that also works around the issue on Xen. The bit width check was introduced by 15afae60 (ACPI, APEI: Fix incorrect APEI register bit width check and usage), and a fixup for incorrect 32-bit width memory address was given by f712c71 (ACPI, APEI: Fixup common access width firmware bug). Now there is a similar symptom: [Firmware Bug]: APEI: Invalid bit width + offset in GAR [0x12345000/64/0/3/0] Another bogus BIOS reports an incorrect 64-bit width in trigger table. Thus, apply to a similar workaround for 64-bit width memory address. At one point acpi_device_set_id() checks if acpi_device_hid(device) returns NULL, but that never happens, so system bus devices with an empty list of PNP IDs are given the dummy HID ("device") instead of the "system bus HID" ("LNXSYBUS"). After commit 71fbad6 (PCI/ACPI: Notify PCI devices when their power resource is turned on) made acpi_pci_bind() call acpi_power_resource_register_device(), the debug message at the end of the latter appears in the kernel log for every PCI device that doesn't happen to have power resources assigned (which is the vast majority of them). However, this message is totally useless, because it doesn't even say which device it is about. Moreover, it is misleading, because it only means that the given device has no power resources, which isn't exceptional at all. The mini-C library implementation is used by the embedded ACPICA users other than Linux. It was added to the kernel source to make it easier to incorporate future ACPICA changes, but as it turns our we can avoid carrying it thanks to some ACPICA release process tweaks, so remove drivers/acpi/acpica/utclib.c from the kernel source tree. On some platforms, _TMP and _CRT/_HOT/_PSV/_ACx have dependency. And there is no way for OS to detect this dependency. commit 9bcb8118965ab4631a65ee0726e6518f75cda6c5 shows us a problem that _TMP must be evaluate after _CRT/_HOT/_PSV/_ACx, or else firmware will shutdown the system. But the machine in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43284 shows us that _PSV would return valid value only if _TMP has been evaluated once. With this patch, all of the control methods will be evaluated once, in the _CRT/_HOT/_PSV/_CRT/_TMP order, before they are actually used. 2012-11-27cpuidle: Measure idle state durations with monotonic clockJulius Werner
Many cpuidle drivers measure their time spent in an idle state by reading the wallclock time before and after idling and calculating the difference. This leads to erroneous results when the wallclock time gets updated by another processor in the meantime, adding that clock adjustment to the idle state's time counter. If the clock adjustment was negative, the result is even worse due to an erroneous cast from int to unsigned long long of the last_residency variable. The negative 32 bit integer will zero-extend and result in a forward time jump of roughly four billion milliseconds or 1.3 hours on the idle state residency counter. This patch changes all affected cpuidle drivers to either use the monotonic clock for their measurements or make use of the generic time measurement wrapper in cpuidle.c, which was already working correctly. Some superfluous CLIs/STIs in the ACPI code are removed (interrupts should always already be disabled before entering the idle function, and not get reenabled until the generic wrapper has performed its second measurement). It also removes the erroneous cast, making sure that negative residency values are applied correctly even though they should not appear anymore. [Issue] Currently, a variable name, which identifies each entry, consists of type, id and ctime. But if multiple events happens in a short time, a second/third event may fail to log because efi_pstore can't distinguish each event with current variable name. [Solution] A reasonable way to identify all events precisely is introducing a sequence counter to the variable name. The sequence counter has already supported in a pstore layer with "oopscount". So, this patch adds it to a variable name.
