2008-01-25kobject: convert ibmasm to use kref, not kobjectGreg Kroah-Hartman
The IBM asm driver is using a kobject only for reference counting, nothing else. So switch it to use a kref instead, which is all that is needed, and is much smaller. Cc: Max Asböck <amax@us.ibm.com> Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-03-10[PATCH] ibmasm: use after free fixMax Asbock
The kobject_put() can free the memory at *cmd, but cmd->lock points to a persistent lock that is not freed with cmd. 2006-01-07Input: ibmasm - convert to dynamic input_dev allocationVernon Mauery
Update the ibmasm driver to use the dynamic allocation of input_dev structs to work with the sysfs subsystem. Vojtech: Fixed some problems/bugs in the patch. Dmitry: Fixed some more. 2005-11-09[PATCH] changing CONFIG_LOCALVERSION rebuilds too much, for no good reasonOlaf Hering
This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3 #defines are unused in most of the touched files. A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is unfortunatly in linux/version.h. There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used. quilt vi `find * -type f -name "*.[ch]"|xargs grep -El '(UTS_RELEASE|LINUX_VERSION_CODE|KERNEL_VERSION|linux/version.h)'|grep -Ev '(/(boot|coda|drm)/|~$)'` search pattern: /UTS_RELEASE\|LINUX_VERSION_CODE\|KERNEL_VERSION\|linux\/\(utsname\|version\).h Signed-off-by: Olaf Hering <olh@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-06-22[PATCH] ibmasm driver: fix race in command refcount logicMax Asbock
This patch fixes a race in the command reference counting logic by putting spinlocks around kobject_put() in the command_put function. - Also added debug messages. - Changed a memcpy to memcpy_fromio since we are reading from io space. 2005-06-22[PATCH] ibmasm driver: redesign handling of remote control eventsMax Asbock
This patch rewrites the handling of remote control events. Rather than making them available from a special file in the ibmasmfs, now the events from the RSA card get translated into kernel input events and injected into the input subsystem. The driver now will generate two /dev/input/eventX nodes -- one for the keyboard and one for the mouse. The mouse node generates absolute events more like a touch pad than a mouse. Due to my incomplete understanding of the wait_event_interruptible() function threads waiting for service processor events were not woken up. This patch fixes that problem. 2005-06-22[PATCH] ibmasm driver: fix command buffer sizeMax Asbock
First of a series of patches for the ibmasm driver. (that is the driver for the IBM xSeries RSA service processor) To summarize what they do: [1] change a #define for the buffer size for commands [2] Fix a bug where threads in the event handling code calling wait_event_interruptible() weren't woken up as expected. [3] Redesigned how remote mouse and keyboard events received by the driver are handled. [4] Fixed a race in the command reference counting logic. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
