2011-05-28ns: Wire up the setns system callEric W. Biederman
32bit and 64bit on x86 are tested and working. The rest I have looked at closely and I can't find any problems. setns is an easy system call to wire up. It just takes two ints so I don't expect any weird architecture porting problems. While doing this I have noticed that we have some architectures that are very slow to get new system calls. cris seems to be the slowest where the last system calls wired up were preadv and pwritev. avr32 is weird in that recvmmsg was wired up but never declared in unistd.h. frv is behind with perf_event_open being the last syscall wired up. On h8300 the last system call wired up was epoll_wait. On m32r the last system call wired up was fallocate. mn10300 has recvmmsg as the last system call wired up. The rest seem to at least have syncfs wired up which was new in the 2.6.39. v2: Most of the architecture support added by Daniel Lezcano <dlezcano@fr.ibm.com> v3: ported to v2.6.36-rc4 by: Eric W. 2011-04-13avr32: add ATAG_BOARDINFOAndreas Bießmann
The ATAG_BOARDINFO is intended to hand over the information bd->bi_board_number from u-boot to the kernel. This piece of information can be used to implement some kind of board identification while booting the kernel. Therefore it is placed in .initdata section and can be accessed via the new symbol board_number only while initializing the kernel. 2011-04-13avr32: init cannot ignore signals sent by force_sig_info()Matt Fleming
We can delete the code that checks to see if we're sending an ignored signal to init because force_sig_info() already handles this case. force_sig_info() will kill init even if the signal handler is SIG_DFL and the scenario described in the comment where init might "generate the same exception over and over again" cannot occur (force_sig_info() clears SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE to ensure that init will die). Also, the use of is_global_init() is not correct in the multhreaded case, as Oleg Nesterov explains, "is_global_init() is not right in theory, /sbin/init can be multithreaded. And, this doesn't cover the sub-namespace inits... I'd suggest to check SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE, but looking closer I think you can simply remove this code." It seems this code was copied from arch/powerpc in March 2007 in commit 623b0355d5b1 "[AVR32] Clean up exception handling code" but the code was deleted from arch/powerpc in November 2009 in commit a0592d42fe3e "powerpc: kill the obsolete code under is_global_init()" So catch up with powerpc and delete the bogus code. This patch will fix the arguments to the architecture sys_clone() function to match the asm-generic/syscalls.h prototype. In the same go remove the architecture specific prototype for the same function. The sys_clone() function is only called from assembly, hence the argument types were not having any affect. 2010-10-05modules: Fix module_bug_list list corruption raceLinus Torvalds
With all the recent module loading cleanups, we've minimized the code that sits under module_mutex, fixing various deadlocks and making it possible to do most of the module loading in parallel. However, that whole conversion totally missed the rather obscure code that adds a new module to the list for BUG() handling. That code was doubly obscure because (a) the code itself lives in lib/bugs.c (for dubious reasons) and (b) it gets called from the architecture-specific "module_finalize()" rather than from generic code. Calling it from arch-specific code makes no sense what-so-ever to begin with, and is now actively wrong since that code isn't protected by the module loading lock any more. So this commit moves the "module_bug_{finalize,cleanup}()" calls away from the arch-specific code, and into the generic code - and in the process protects it with the module_mutex so that the list operations are now safe. Future fixups: - move the module list handling code into kernel/module.c where it belongs. - get rid of 'module_bug_list' and just use the regular list of modules (called 'modules' - imagine that) that we already create and maintain for other reasons. 2010-08-18Make do_execve() take a const filename pointerDavid Howells
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles correctly on ARM: arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel(). do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as const should be fine. Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match. This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-03-12avr32: use generic ptrace_resume codeChristoph Hellwig
Use the generic ptrace_resume code for PTRACE_SYSCALL, PTRACE_CONT, PTRACE_KILL and PTRACE_SINGLESTEP. This implies defining arch_has_single_step in <asm/ptrace.h> and implementing the user_enable_single_step and user_disable_single_step functions, which also causes the breakpoint information to be cleared on fork, which could be considered a bug fix. Also the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE thread flag is now cleared on PTRACE_KILL which it previously wasn't which is consistent with all architectures using the modern ptrace code. Currently avr32 doesn't implement any code to disable single stepping when one of the non-syscall requests is called which seems wrong, but I've left it as-is for now. 2009-10-13net: Introduce recvmmsg socket syscallArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
Meaning receive multiple messages, reducing the number of syscalls and net stack entry/exit operations. Next patches will introduce mechanisms where protocols that want to optimize this operation will provide an unlocked_recvmsg operation. This takes into account comments made by: . Paul Moore: sock_recvmsg is called only for the first datagram, sock_recvmsg_nosec is used for the rest. . Caitlin Bestler: recvmmsg now has a struct timespec timeout, that works in the same fashion as the ppoll one. If the underlying protocol returns a datagram with MSG_OOB set, this will make recvmmsg return right away with as many datagrams (+ the OOB one) it has received so far. . Rémi Denis-Courmont & Steven Whitehouse: If we receive N < vlen datagrams and then recvmsg returns an error, recvmmsg will return the successfully received datagrams, store the error and return it in the next call. This paves the way for a subsequent optimization, sk_prot->unlocked_recvmsg, where we will be able to acquire the lock only at batch start and end, not at every underlying recvmsg call. 2009-09-09KEYS: Add missing linux/tracehook.h #inclusionsDavid Howells

2009-09-02KEYS: Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring on its parent [try #6]David Howells
Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring onto its parent. This replaces the parent's session keyring. Because the COW credential code does not permit one process to change another process's credentials directly, the change is deferred until userspace next starts executing again. Normally this will be after a wait*() syscall. To support this, three new security hooks have been provided: cred_alloc_blank() to allocate unset security creds, cred_transfer() to fill in the blank security creds and key_session_to_parent() - which asks the LSM if the process may replace its parent's session keyring. The replacement may only happen if the process has the same ownership details as its parent, and the process has LINK permission on the session keyring, and the session keyring is owned by the process, and the LSM permits it. Note that this requires alteration to each architecture's notify_resume path. This has been done for all arches barring blackfin, m68k* and xtensa, all of which need assembly alteration to support TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME. This allows the replacement to be performed at the point the parent process resumes userspace execution. This allows the userspace AFS pioctl emulation to fully emulate newpag() and the VIOCSETTOK and VIOCSETTOK2 pioctls, all of which require the ability to alter the parent process's PAG membership. However, since kAFS doesn't use PAGs per se, but rather dumps the keys into the session keyring, the session keyring of the parent must be replaced if, for example, VIOCSETTOK is passed the newpag flag. This can be tested with the following program: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <keyutils.h> #define KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT 18 #define OSERROR(X, S) do { if ((long)(X) == -1) { perror(S); exit(1); } } while(0) int main(int argc, char **argv) { key_serial_t keyring, key; long ret; keyring = keyctl_join_session_keyring(argv[1]); OSERROR(keyring, "keyctl_join_session_keyring"); key = add_key("user", "a", "b", 1, keyring); OSERROR(key, "add_key"); ret = keyctl(KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT); OSERROR(ret, "KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT"); return 0; } Compiled and linked with -lkeyutils, you should see something like: [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: _ses 355907932 --alswrv 4043 -1 \_ keyring: _uid.4043 [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: _ses 1055658746 --alswrv 4043 4043 \_ user: a [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag hello [dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show Session Keyring -3 --alswrv 4043 4043 keyring: hello 340417692 --alswrv 4043 4043 \_ user: a Where the test program creates a new session keyring, sticks a user key named 'a' into it and then installs it on its parent. 2009-09-02KEYS: Extend TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME to (almost) all architectures [try #6]David Howells
Implement TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME for most of those architectures in which isn't yet available, and, whilst we're at it, have it call the appropriate tracehook. After this patch, blackfin, m68k* and xtensa still lack support and need alteration of assembly code to make it work. Resume notification can then be used (by a later patch) to install a new session keyring on the parent of a process. 2009-07-09linker script: unify usage of discard definitionTejun Heo
Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining tedious and adding new entries error-prone. This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script. ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion. defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64, alpha, sparc, sparc64 and s390. 2009-06-13avr32: Fix oops on unaligned user accessHaavard Skinnemoen
The unaligned address exception handler (and others) does not scan the fixup tables before oopsing. This is bad because it means passing a badly aligned pointer from user space might crash the kernel. Fix this by scanning the fixup tables in _exception(). This should resolve the issue for unaligned addresses as well as other less common exceptions that might be happening during a userspace access. The page fault handler already does fixup processing. 2009-01-16avr32: Fix out-of-range rcalls in large kernelsBen Nizette
Replace handcoded rcall instructions with the call pseudo-instruction. For kernels too far over 1MB the rcall instruction can't reach and linking will fail. We already call the final linker with --relax which converts call pseudo-instructions to the right things anyway. This fixes arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o: In function `syscall_exit_work': (.ex.text+0x198): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against symbol `schedule' defined in .sched.text section in kernel/built-in.o arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o: In function `fault_exit_work': (.ex.text+0x3b6): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against symbol `schedule' defined in .sched.text section in kernel/built-in.o But I'm still left with arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x2): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+45a arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x8): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+8ea arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0xe): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+abe arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x14): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+ac8 arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x1a): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+ad2 arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x20): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+adc arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x26): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+ae6 arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x2c): relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_22H_PCREL against `.text'+af0 arch/avr32/kernel/built-in.o:(.fixup+0x32): additional relocation overflows omitted from the output These are caused by a similar problem with 'rjmp' instructions.
