2007-08-20ide: fix hidden dependencies on CONFIG_IDE_GENERICBartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz
Some host drivers depend on CONFIG_IDE_GENERIC to do the probing but their config options lack explicit dependencies on IDE_GENERIC. In the long-term these host drivers should be fixed to do the probing themselves but for now fix them by making their config options select CONFIG_IDE_GENERIC. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. 2007-07-19mm: fault feedback #2Nick Piggin
This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. This requires requires all handle_mm_fault callers to be modified (possibly the modifications should go further and do things like fault accounting in handle_mm_fault -- however that would be for another patch). 2007-07-16Remove the last few UMSDOS leftoversJesper Juhl
The UMSDOS filesystem was removed back in 2.6.11, but some tiny bits stuck around. This patch removes the few remaining leftovers. The only things left behind after this are the entries in the CREDITS file and the ioctl number in Documentation/ioctl-number.txt as documentation. This third (hopefully final) version of the patch doesn't edit the arch/um/config.release file, since Jeff Dike pointed out to me that it should die completely, and asked me to remove it from my patch as he'll send in a seperate patch removing the file completely. 2007-03-28[PATCH] MSI-X: fix resume crashEric W. Biederman
So I think the right solution is to simply make pci_enable_device just flip enable bits and move the rest of the work someplace else. However a thorough cleanup is a little extreme for this point in the release cycle, so I think a quick hack that makes the code not stomp the irq when msi irq's are enabled should be the first fix. 2007-02-11[PATCH] optional ZONE_DMA: introduce CONFIG_ZONE_DMAChristoph Lameter
This patch simply defines CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches. We later do special things with CONFIG_ZONE_DMA after the VM and an arch are prepared to work without ZONE_DMA. CONFIG_ZONE_DMA can be defined in two ways depending on how an architecture handles ISA DMA. First if CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA is set by the arch then we know that the arch needs ZONE_DMA because ISA DMA devices are supported. We can catch this in mm/Kconfig and do not need to modify arch code. Second, arches may use ZONE_DMA in an unknown way. We set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches that do not set CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA in order to insure backwards compatibility. The arches may later undefine ZONE_DMA if their arch code has been verified to not depend on ZONE_DMA. 2007-01-12[PATCH] Change cpu_up and co from __devinit to __cpuinitGautham R Shenoy
Compiling the kernel with CONFIG_HOTPLUG = y and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU = n with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE = y generates the following modpost warnings WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b7d) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b9c) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:__cpu_up from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141bd8) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c05) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c26) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c37) and 'cpu_up' This is because cpu_up, _cpu_up and __cpu_up (in some architectures) are defined as __devinit AND __cpu_up calls some __cpuinit functions. Since __cpuinit would map to __init with this kind of a configuration, we get a .text refering .init.data warning. This patch solves the problem by converting all of __cpu_up, _cpu_up and cpu_up from __devinit to __cpuinit. The approach is justified since the callers of cpu_up are either dependent on CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU or are of __init type. Thus when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y, all these cpu up functions would land up in .text section, and when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n, all these functions would land up in .init section. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. Several sections of code (including the new filemap_copy_from_user) rely on the fact that faults do not take locks under increased preempt count. arch/x86_64 - good arch/powerpc - good arch/cris - fixed arch/i386 - good arch/parisc - fixed arch/sh - good arch/sparc - good arch/s390 - good arch/m68k - fixed arch/ppc - good arch/alpha - fixed arch/mips - good arch/sparc64 - good arch/ia64 - good arch/arm - fixed arch/um - good arch/avr32 - good arch/h8300 - NA arch/m32r - good arch/v850 - good arch/frv - fixed arch/m68knommu - NA arch/arm26 - fixed arch/sh64 - fixed arch/xtensa - good Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Acked-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-10-02[PATCH] namespaces: utsname: use init_utsname when appropriateSerge E. Hallyn
In some places, particularly drivers and __init code, the init utsns is the appropriate one to use. This patch replaces those with a the init_utsname helper. Changes: Removed several uses of init_utsname(). Hope I picked all the right ones in net/ipv4/ipconfig.c. These are now changed to utsname() (the per-process namespace utsname) in the previous patch (2/7) [akpm@osdl.org: CIFS fix] Signed-off-by: Serge E. 2006-10-01[PATCH] kill wall_jiffiesAtsushi Nemoto
With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies. So we can kill wall_jiffies completely. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. 2006-09-29[PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch) Signed-off-by: Atsushi Nemoto <anemo@mba.ocn.ne.jp> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. 2006-07-10[PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl
screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error.
