git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mmarek/kbuild Pull treewide kbuild cleanup from Michal Marek: "Paul Bolle did a cleanup of <asm/*.h> headers in various architectures. Because the patch touch several architectures at once, it was easiest for me to apply them to the kbuild tree." * 'trivial' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mmarek/kbuild: Remove useless wrappers of asm-generic/rmap.h Remove useless wrappers of asm-generic/ipc.h Remove useless wrappers of asm-generic/cpumask.h
2012-06-28Remove useless wrappers of asm-generic/ipc.hPaul Bolle
mn10300 has a header (in its include/asm directory) that is a thin wrapper around asm-generic/ipc.h. This wrapper is useless, since that header doesn't exist. It is also unused (no file includes asm/ipc.h). hexagon and tile generate similar headers at build time (using a generic-y entry in include/asm/Kbuild). These generated headers are useless and unused too. Remove this header and these generic-y entries. frv and xtensa both have a header (in their include/asm directories) that are thin wrappers around asm-generic/cpumask.h. These wrappers are useless, since that header doesn't exist. They are also unused (all files including asm/cpumask.h are x86 specific). hexagon and openrisc generate similar headers at build time (using a generic-y entry in include/asm/Kbuild). 2012-06-05hexagon: SMP: Remove call to ipi_call_lock()/ipi_call_unlock()Yong Zhang
ipi_call_lock/unlock() lock resp. unlock call_function.lock. This lock protects only the call_function data structure itself, but it's completely unrelated to cpu_online_mask. The mask to which the IPIs are sent is calculated before call_function.lock is taken in smp_call_function_many(), so the locking around set_cpu_online() is pointless and can be removed. 2012-06-01new helper: signal_delivered()Al Viro
Does block_sigmask() + tracehook_signal_handler(); called when sigframe has been successfully built. All architectures converted to it; block_sigmask() itself is gone now (merged into this one). I'm still not too happy with the signature, but that's a separate story (IMO we need a structure that would contain signal number + siginfo + k_sigaction, so that get_signal_to_deliver() would fill one, signal_delivered(), handle_signal() and probably setup...frame() - take one). 2012-06-01Merge branch 'for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal Pull second pile of signal handling patches from Al Viro: "This one is just task_work_add() series + remaining prereqs for it. There probably will be another pull request from that tree this cycle - at least for helpers, to get them out of the way for per-arch fixes remaining in the tree." Fix trivial conflict in kernel/irq/manage.c: the merge of Andrew's pile had brought in commit 97fd75b7b8e0 ("kernel/irq/manage.c: use the pr_foo() infrastructure to prefix printks") which changed one of the pr_err() calls that this merge moves around. * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal: keys: kill task_struct->replacement_session_keyring keys: kill the dummy key_replace_session_keyring() keys: change keyctl_session_to_parent() to use task_work_add() genirq: reimplement exit_irq_thread() hook via task_work_add() task_work_add: generic process-context callbacks avr32: missed _TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME on one of do_notify_resume callers parisc: need to check NOTIFY_RESUME when exiting from syscall move key_repace_session_keyring() into tracehook_notify_resume() TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME is defined on all targets now
2012-05-24Merge branch 'next' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvmLinus Torvalds
Pull KVM changes from Avi Kivity: "Changes include additional instruction emulation, page-crossing MMIO, faster dirty logging, preventing the watchdog from killing a stopped guest, module autoload, a new MSI ABI, and some minor optimizations and fixes. Outside x86 we have a small s390 and a very large ppc update. Regarding the new (for kvm) rebaseless workflow, some of the patches that were merged before we switch trees had to be rebased, while others are true pulls. In either case the signoffs should be correct now." Fix up trivial conflicts in Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt arch/powerpc/kvm/book3s_segment.S and arch/x86/include/asm/kvm_para.h. I suspect the kvm_para.h resolution ends up doing the "do I have cpuid" check effectively twice (it was done differently in two different commits), but better safe than sorry ;) * 'next' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm: (125 commits) KVM: make asm-generic/kvm_para.h have an ifdef __KERNEL__ block KVM: s390: onereg for timer related registers KVM: s390: epoch difference and TOD programmable field KVM: s390: KVM_GET/SET_ONEREG for s390 KVM: s390: add capability indicating COW support KVM: Fix mmu_reload() clash with nested vmx event injection KVM: MMU: Don't use RCU for lockless shadow walking KVM: VMX: Optimize %ds, %es reload KVM: VMX: Fix %ds/%es clobber KVM: x86 emulator: convert bsf/bsr instructions to emulate_2op_SrcV_nobyte() KVM: VMX: unlike vmcs on fail path KVM: PPC: Emulator: clean up SPR reads and writes KVM: PPC: Emulator: clean up instruction parsing kvm/powerpc: Add new ioctl to retreive server MMU infos kvm/book3s: Make kernel emulated H_PUT_TCE available for "PR" KVM KVM: PPC: bookehv: Fix r8/r13 storing in level exception handler KVM: PPC: Book3S: Enable IRQs during exit handling KVM: PPC: Fix PR KVM on POWER7 bare metal KVM: PPC: Fix stbux emulation KVM: PPC: bookehv: Use lwz/stw instead of PPC_LL/PPC_STL for 32-bit fields ...

With this, a bunch of assorted old buglets are fixed and most of the missing bits of NOTIFY_RESUME hookup are in place. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull fpu state cleanups from Ingo Molnar: "This tree streamlines further aspects of FPU handling by eliminating the prepare_to_copy() complication and moving that logic to arch_dup_task_struct(). It also fixes the FPU dumps in threaded core dumps, removes and old (and now invalid) assumption plus micro-optimizes the exit path by avoiding an FPU save for dead tasks." Fixed up trivial add-add conflict in arch/sh/kernel/process.c that came in because we now do the FPU handling in arch_dup_task_struct() rather than the legacy (and now gone) prepare_to_copy(). * 'x86-fpu-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: x86, fpu: drop the fpu state during thread exit x86, xsave: remove thread_has_fpu() bug check in __sanitize_i387_state() coredump: ensure the fpu state is flushed for proper multi-threaded core dump fork: move the real prepare_to_copy() users to arch_dup_task_struct()

2012-05-21timers: Fixup the Kconfig consolidation falloutThomas Gleixner
Sigh, I missed to check which architecture Kconfig files actually include the core Kconfig file. There are a few which did not. So we broke them. Instead of adding the includes to those, we are better off to move the include to init/Kconfig like we did already with irqs and others. This does not change anything for the architectures using the old style periodic timer mode. It just solves the build wreckage there. For those architectures which use the clock events infrastructure it moves the include of the core Kconfig file to "General setup" which is a way more logical place than having it at random locations specified by the architecture specific Kconfigs. 2012-04-05Merge branch 'for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.linaro.org/people/mszyprowski/linux-dma-mapping Pull DMA mapping branch from Marek Szyprowski: "Short summary for the whole series: A few limitations have been identified in the current dma-mapping design and its implementations for various architectures. There exist more than one function for allocating and freeing the buffers: currently these 3 are used dma_{alloc, free}_coherent, dma_{alloc,free}_writecombine, dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherent. For most of the systems these calls are almost equivalent and can be interchanged. For others, especially the truly non-coherent ones (like ARM), the difference can be easily noticed in overall driver performance. Sadly not all architectures provide implementations for all of them, so the drivers might need to be adapted and cannot be easily shared between different architectures. The provided patches unify all these functions and hide the differences under the already existing dma attributes concept. The thread with more references is available here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-sh/msg09777.html These patches are also a prerequisite for unifying DMA-mapping implementation on ARM architecture with the common one provided by dma_map_ops structure and extending it with IOMMU support. More information is available in the following thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.cross-arch/12819 More works on dma-mapping framework are planned, especially in the area of buffer sharing and managing the shared mappings (together with the recently introduced dma_buf interface: commit d15bd7ee445d "dma-buf: Introduce dma buffer sharing mechanism"). The patches in the current set introduce a new alloc/free methods (with support for memory attributes) in dma_map_ops structure, which will later replace dma_alloc_coherent and dma_alloc_writecombine functions." People finally started piping up with support for merging this, so I'm merging it as the last of the pending stuff from the merge window. Looks like pohmelfs is going to wait for 3.5 and more external support for merging. * 'for-linus' of git://git.linaro.org/people/mszyprowski/linux-dma-mapping: common: DMA-mapping: add NON-CONSISTENT attribute common: DMA-mapping: add WRITE_COMBINE attribute common: dma-mapping: introduce mmap method common: dma-mapping: remove old alloc_coherent and free_coherent methods Hexagon: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Unicore32: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Microblaze: adapt for dma_map_ops changes SH: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Alpha: adapt for dma_map_ops changes SPARC: adapt for dma_map_ops changes PowerPC: adapt for dma_map_ops changes MIPS: adapt for dma_map_ops changes X86 & IA64: adapt for dma_map_ops changes common: dma-mapping: introduce generic alloc() and free() methods

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-asm_system Pull "Disintegrate and delete asm/system.h" from David Howells: "Here are a bunch of patches to disintegrate asm/system.h into a set of separate bits to relieve the problem of circular inclusion dependencies. I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can and made sure that they don't break. The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2(). This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h. The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg. memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()). These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces: (1) asm/barrier.h Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha. (2) asm/switch_to.h Move switch_to() and related stuff here. (3) asm/exec.h Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h. (4) asm/cmpxchg.h Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg(). (5) asm/bug.h Move die() and related bits. (6) asm/auxvec.h Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here. Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis." Fixed up some conflicts from other header file cleanups and moving code around that has happened in the meantime, so David's testing is somewhat weakened by that. 2012-03-23coredump: remove VM_ALWAYSDUMP flagJason Baron
The motivation for this patchset was that I was looking at a way for a qemu-kvm process, to exclude the guest memory from its core dump, which can be quite large. There are already a number of filter flags in /proc/<pid>/coredump_filter, however, these allow one to specify 'types' of kernel memory, not specific address ranges (which is needed in this case). Since there are no more vma flags available, the first patch eliminates the need for the 'VM_ALWAYSDUMP' flag. The flag is used internally by the kernel to mark vdso and vsyscall pages. However, it is simple enough to check if a vma covers a vdso or vsyscall page without the need for this flag. The second patch then replaces the 'VM_ALWAYSDUMP' flag with a new 'VM_NODUMP' flag, which can be set by userspace using new madvise flags: 'MADV_DONTDUMP', and unset via 'MADV_DODUMP'. The core dump filters continue to work the same as before unless 'MADV_DONTDUMP' is set on the region. The qemu code which implements this features is at: http://people.redhat.com/~jbaron/qemu-dump/qemu-dump.patch In my testing the qemu core dump shrunk from 383MB -> 13MB with this patch. I also believe that the 'MADV_DONTDUMP' flag might be useful for security sensitive apps, which might want to select which areas are dumped. This patch: The VM_ALWAYSDUMP flag is currently used by the coredump code to indicate that a vma is part of a vsyscall or vdso section. However, we can determine if a vma is in one these sections by checking it against the gate_vma and checking for a non-NULL return value from arch_vma_name(). Thus, freeing a valuable vma bit. 2012-03-23Hexagon: use set_current_blocked() and block_sigmask()Matt Fleming
As described in e6fa16ab9c1e ("signal: sigprocmask() should do retarget_shared_pending()") the modification of current->blocked is incorrect as we need to check whether the signal we're about to block is pending in the shared queue. Also, use the new helper function introduced in commit 5e6292c0f28f ("signal: add block_sigmask() for adding sigmask to current->blocked") which centralises the code for updating current->blocked after successfully delivering a signal and reduces the amount of duplicate code across architectures. In the past some architectures got this code wrong, so using this helper function should stop that from happening again. 2012-03-12sched: Cleanup cpu_active madnessPeter Zijlstra
Stepan found: CPU0 CPUn _cpu_up() __cpu_up() boostrap() notify_cpu_starting() set_cpu_online() while (!cpu_active()) cpu_relax() <PREEMPT-out> smp_call_function(.wait=1) /* we find cpu_online() is true */ arch_send_call_function_ipi_mask() /* wait-forever-more */ <PREEMPT-in> local_irq_enable() cpu_notify(CPU_ONLINE) sched_cpu_active() set_cpu_active() Now the purpose of cpu_active is mostly with bringing down a cpu, where we mark it !active to avoid the load-balancer from moving tasks to it while we tear down the cpu. This is required because we only update the sched_domain tree after we brought the cpu-down. And this is needed so that some tasks can still run while we bring it down, we just don't want new tasks to appear. On cpu-up however the sched_domain tree doesn't yet include the new cpu, so its invisible to the load-balancer, regardless of the active state. So instead of setting the active state after we boot the new cpu (and consequently having to wait for it before enabling interrupts) set the cpu active before we set it online and avoid the whole mess. 2011-12-21perf, arch: Rework perf_event_index()Peter Zijlstra
Put the logic to compute the event index into a per pmu method. This is required because the x86 rules are weird and wonderful and don't match the capabilities of the current scheme. AFAIK only powerpc actually has a usable userspace read of the PMCs but I'm not at all sure anybody actually used that. ARM is restored to the default since it currently does not support userspace access at all. And all software events are provided with a method that reports their index as 0 (disabled).
