2013-06-24[IA64] Delete __cpuinit usage from all ia64 usersPaul Gortmaker
The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. This removes all the ia64 uses of the __cpuinit macros. 2013-05-01dump_stack: unify debug information printed by show_regs()Tejun Heo
show_regs() is inherently arch-dependent but it does make sense to print generic debug information and some archs already do albeit in slightly different forms. This patch introduces a generic function to print debug information from show_regs() so that different archs print out the same information and it's much easier to modify what's printed. show_regs_print_info() prints out the same debug info as dump_stack() does plus task and thread_info pointers. * Archs which didn't print debug info now do. alpha, arc, blackfin, c6x, cris, frv, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m32r, metag, microblaze, mn10300, openrisc, parisc, score, sh64, sparc, um, xtensa * Already prints debug info. Replaced with show_regs_print_info(). The printed information is superset of what used to be there. arm, arm64, avr32, mips, powerpc, sh32, tile, unicore32, x86 * s390 is special in that it used to print arch-specific information along with generic debug info. Heiko and Martin think that the arch-specific extra isn't worth keeping s390 specfic implementation. Converted to use the generic version. Note that now all archs print the debug info before actual register dumps. 2013-05-01dump_stack: implement arch-specific hardware description in task dumpsTejun Heo
x86 and ia64 can acquire extra hardware identification information from DMI and print it along with task dumps; however, the usage isn't consistent. * x86 show_regs() collects vendor, product and board strings and print them out with PID, comm and utsname. Some of the information is printed again later in the same dump. * warn_slowpath_common() explicitly accesses the DMI board and prints it out with "Hardware name:" label. This applies to both x86 and ia64 but is irrelevant on all other archs. * ia64 doesn't show DMI information on other non-WARN dumps. This patch introduces arch-specific hardware description used by dump_stack(). It can be set by calling dump_stack_set_arch_desc() during boot and, if exists, printed out in a separate line with "Hardware name:" label. dmi_set_dump_stack_arch_desc() is added which sets arch-specific description from DMI data. It uses dmi_ids_string[] which is set from dmi_present() used for DMI debug message. It is superset of the information x86 show_regs() is using. The function is called from x86 and ia64 boot code right after dmi_scan_machine(). This makes the explicit DMI handling in warn_slowpath_common() unnecessary. Removed. show_regs() isn't yet converted to use generic debug information printing and this patch doesn't remove the duplicate DMI handling in x86 show_regs(). The next patch will unify show_regs() handling and remove the duplication. An example WARN dump follows. WARNING: at kernel/workqueue.c:4841 init_workqueues+0x35/0x505() Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #3 Hardware name: empty empty/S3992, BIOS 080011 10/26/2007 0000000000000009 ffff88007c861e08 ffffffff81c614dc ffff88007c861e48 ffffffff8108f500 ffffffff82228240 0000000000000040 ffffffff8234a08e 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861e58 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c614dc>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f500>] warn_slowpath_common+0x70/0xa0 [<ffffffff8108f54a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff8234a0c3>] init_workqueues+0x35/0x505 ... v2: Use the same string as the debug message from dmi_present() which also contains BIOS information. 2013-05-01dump_stack: consolidate dump_stack() implementations and unify their behaviorsTejun Heo
Both dump_stack() and show_stack() are currently implemented by each architecture. show_stack(NULL, NULL) dumps the backtrace for the current task as does dump_stack(). On some archs, dump_stack() prints extra information - pid, utsname and so on - in addition to the backtrace while the two are identical on other archs. The usages in arch-independent code of the two functions indicate show_stack(NULL, NULL) should print out bare backtrace while dump_stack() is used for debugging purposes when something went wrong, so it does make sense to print additional information on the task which triggered dump_stack(). There's no reason to require archs to implement two separate but mostly identical functions. It leads to unnecessary subtle information. This patch expands the dummy fallback dump_stack() implementation in lib/dump_stack.c such that it prints out debug information (taken from x86) and invokes show_stack(NULL, NULL) and drops arch-specific dump_stack() implementations in all archs except blackfin. Blackfin's dump_stack() does something wonky that I don't understand. Debug information can be printed separately by calling dump_stack_print_info() so that arch-specific dump_stack() implementation can still emit the same debug information. This is used in blackfin. This patch brings the following behavior changes. * On some archs, an extra level in backtrace for show_stack() could be printed. This is because the top frame was determined in dump_stack() on those archs while generic dump_stack() can't do that reliably. It can be compensated by inlining dump_stack() but not sure whether that'd be necessary. * Most archs didn't use to print debug info on dump_stack(). They do now. An example WARN dump follows. WARNING: at kernel/workqueue.c:4841 init_workqueues+0x35/0x505() Hardware name: empty Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #9 0000000000000009 ffff88007c861e08 ffffffff81c614dc ffff88007c861e48 ffffffff8108f50f ffffffff82228240 0000000000000040 ffffffff8234a03c 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861e58 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c614dc>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f50f>] warn_slowpath_common+0x7f/0xc0 [<ffffffff8108f56a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff8234a071>] init_workqueues+0x35/0x505 ... v2: CPU number added to the generic debug info as requested by s390 folks and dropped the s390 specific dump_stack(). This loses %ksp from the debug message which the maintainers think isn't important enough to keep the s390-specific dump_stack() implementation. dump_stack_print_info() is moved to kernel/printk.c from lib/dump_stack.c. Because linkage is per objecct file, dump_stack_print_info() living in the same lib file as generic dump_stack() means that archs which implement custom dump_stack() - at this point, only blackfin - can't use dump_stack_print_info() as that will bring in the generic version of dump_stack() too. v1 The v1 patch broke build on blackfin due to this issue. The build breakage was reported by Fengguang Wu. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Acked-by: David S. 2013-04-02Fix initialization of CMCI/CMCP interruptsTony Luck
Back 2010 during a revamp of the irq code some initializations were moved from ia64_mca_init() to ia64_mca_late_init() in commit c75f2aa13f5b268aba369b5dc566088b5194377c Cannot use register_percpu_irq() from ia64_mca_init() But this was hideously wrong. First of all these initializations are now down far too late. Specifically after all the other cpus have been brought up and initialized their own CMC vectors from smp_callin(). Also ia64_mca_late_init() may be called from any cpu so the line: ia64_mca_cmc_vector_setup(); /* Setup vector on BSP */ is generally not executed on the BSP, and so the CMC vector isn't setup at all on that processor. Make use of the arch_early_irq_init() hook to get this code executed at just the right moment: not too early, not too late. 2013-03-19Fix broken fsys_getppid()Eric W. Biederman
In particular fsys_getppid always returns the ppid in the initial pid namespace so it does not work for a process in a pid namespace. Fix from Eric Biederman just removes the fast system call path. While it is a little bit sad to see another one of these bite the dust ... I can't imagine that getppid() is really on any real applications critical path. 2013-03-04fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.Eric W. Biederman
Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-" and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules to match. A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel. Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially making things safer with no real cost. Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe, well understood work-arounds to known problematic software. This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module autofs4. This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module. After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module() without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep. Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT, which most filesystems do not set today. 2013-02-28hlist: drop the node parameter from iteratorsSasha Levin
I'm not sure why, but the hlist for each entry iterators were conceived list_for_each_entry(pos, head, member) The hlist ones were greedy and wanted an extra parameter: hlist_for_each_entry(tpos, pos, head, member) Why did they need an extra pos parameter? I'm not quite sure. Not only they don't really need it, it also prevents the iterator from looking exactly like the list iterator, which is unfortunate. Besides the semantic patch, there was some manual work required: - Fix up the actual hlist iterators in linux/list.h - Fix up the declaration of other iterators based on the hlist ones. - A very small amount of places were using the 'node' parameter, this was modified to use 'obj->member' instead. - Coccinelle didn't handle the hlist_for_each_entry_safe iterator properly, so those had to be fixed up manually. The semantic patch which is mostly the work of Peter Senna Tschudin is here: @@ iterator name hlist_for_each_entry, hlist_for_each_entry_continue, hlist_for_each_entry_from, hlist_for_each_entry_rcu, hlist_for_each_entry_rcu_bh, hlist_for_each_entry_continue_rcu_bh, for_each_busy_worker, ax25_uid_for_each, ax25_for_each, inet_bind_bucket_for_each, sctp_for_each_hentry, sk_for_each, sk_for_each_rcu, sk_for_each_from, sk_for_each_safe, sk_for_each_bound, hlist_for_each_entry_safe, hlist_for_each_entry_continue_rcu, nr_neigh_for_each, nr_neigh_for_each_safe, nr_node_for_each, nr_node_for_each_safe, for_each_gfn_indirect_valid_sp, for_each_gfn_sp, for_each_host; type T; expression a,c,d,e; identifier b; statement S; @@ -T b; <+... when != b ( hlist_for_each_entry(a, - b, c, d) S | hlist_for_each_entry_continue(a, - b, c) S | hlist_for_each_entry_from(a, - b, c) S | hlist_for_each_entry_rcu(a, - b, c, d) S | hlist_for_each_entry_rcu_bh(a, - b, c, d) S | hlist_for_each_entry_continue_rcu_bh(a, - b, c) S | for_each_busy_worker(a, c, - b, d) S | ax25_uid_for_each(a, - b, c) S | ax25_for_each(a, - b, c) S | inet_bind_bucket_for_each(a, - b, c) S | sctp_for_each_hentry(a, - b, c) S | sk_for_each(a, - b, c) S | sk_for_each_rcu(a, - b, c) S | sk_for_each_from -(a, b) +(a) S + sk_for_each_from(a) S | sk_for_each_safe(a, - b, c, d) S | sk_for_each_bound(a, - b, c) S | hlist_for_each_entry_safe(a, - b, c, d, e) S | hlist_for_each_entry_continue_rcu(a, - b, c) S | nr_neigh_for_each(a, - b, c) S | nr_neigh_for_each_safe(a, - b, c, d) S | nr_node_for_each(a, - b, c) S | nr_node_for_each_safe(a, - b, c, d) S | - for_each_gfn_sp(a, c, d, b) S + for_each_gfn_sp(a, c, d) S | - for_each_gfn_indirect_valid_sp(a, c, d, b) S + for_each_gfn_indirect_valid_sp(a, c, d) S | for_each_host(a, - b, c) S | for_each_host_safe(a, - b, c, d) S | for_each_mesh_entry(a, - b, c, d) S ) ...+> [akpm@linux-foundation.org: drop bogus change from net/ipv4/raw.c] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: drop bogus hunk from net/ipv6/raw.c] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: checkpatch fixes] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix warnings] [akpm@linux-foudnation.org: redo intrusive kvm changes] Tested-by: Peter Senna Tschudin <peter.senna@gmail.com> Acked-by: Paul E. 2013-02-23fs: Preserve error code in get_empty_filp(), part 2Anatol Pomozov
Allocating a file structure in function get_empty_filp() might fail because of several reasons: - not enough memory for file structures - operation is not allowed - user is over its limit Currently the function returns NULL in all cases and we loose the exact reason of the error. All callers of get_empty_filp() assume that the function can fail with ENFILE only. Return error through pointer. Change all callers to preserve this error code. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/frederic/linux-dynticks into sched/core Pull full-dynticks (user-space execution is undisturbed and receives no timer IRQs) preparation changes that convert the cputime accounting code to be full-dynticks ready, from Frederic Weisbecker: "This implements the cputime accounting on full dynticks CPUs. Typical cputime stats infrastructure relies on the timer tick and its periodic polling on the CPU to account the amount of time spent by the CPUs and the tasks per high level domains such as userspace, kernelspace, guest, ... Now we are preparing to implement full dynticks capability on Linux for Real Time and HPC users who want full CPU isolation. This feature requires a cputime accounting that doesn't depend on the timer tick. To implement it, this new cputime infrastructure plugs into kernel/user/guest boundaries to take snapshots of cputime and flush these to the stats when needed. This performs pretty much like CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING except that context location and cputime snaphots are synchronized between write and read side such that the latter can safely retrieve the pending tickless cputime of a task and add it to its latest cputime snapshot to return the correct result to the user." 2013-01-27cputime: Generic on-demand virtual cputime accountingFrederic Weisbecker
If we want to stop the tick further idle, we need to be able to account the cputime without using the tick. Virtual based cputime accounting solves that problem by hooking into kernel/user boundaries. However implementing CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING require low level hooks and involves more overhead. But we already have a generic context tracking subsystem that is required for RCU needs by archs which plan to shut down the tick outside idle. This patch implements a generic virtual based cputime accounting that relies on these generic kernel/user hooks. There are some upsides of doing this: - This requires no arch code to implement CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING if context tracking is already built (already necessary for RCU in full tickless mode). - We can rely on the generic context tracking subsystem to dynamically (de)activate the hooks, so that we can switch anytime between virtual and tick based accounting. This way we don't have the overhead of the virtual accounting when the tick is running periodically. And one downside: - There is probably more overhead than a native virtual based cputime accounting. But this relies on hooks that are already set anyway. The ia64 function "thread_matches()" has no users since commit e868a55c2a8c ("[IA64] remove find_thread_for_addr()"). Remove it.
