2010-09-15[IA64] Optimize ticket spinlocks in fsys_rt_sigprocmaskPetr Tesarik
Tony's fix (f574c843191728d9407b766a027f779dcd27b272) has a small bug, it incorrectly uses "r3" as a scratch register in the first of the two unlock paths ... it is also inefficient. 2010-09-14compat: Make compat_alloc_user_space() incorporate the access_ok()H. Peter Anvin
compat_alloc_user_space() expects the caller to independently call access_ok() to verify the returned area. A missing call could introduce problems on some architectures. This patch incorporates the access_ok() check into compat_alloc_user_space() and also adds a sanity check on the length. The existing compat_alloc_user_space() implementations are renamed arch_compat_alloc_user_space() and are used as part of the implementation of the new global function. This patch assumes NULL will cause __get_user()/__put_user() to either fail or access userspace on all architectures. This should be followed by checking the return value of compat_access_user_space() for NULL in the callers, at which time the access_ok() in the callers can also be removed. 2010-09-09[IA64] fix siglockTony Luck
When ia64 converted to using ticket locks, an inline implementation of trylock/unlock in fsys.S was missed. This was not noticed because in most circumstances it simply resulted in using the slow path because the siglock was apparently not available (under old spinlock rules). Problems occur when the ticket spinlock has value 0x0 (when first initialised, or when it wraps around). At this point the fsys.S code acquires the lock (changing the 0x0 to 0x1. If another process attempts to get the lock at this point, it will change the value from 0x1 to 0x2 (using new ticket lock rules). Then the fsys.S code will free the lock using old spinlock rules by writing 0x0 to it. From here a variety of bad things can happen. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>

2010-08-18[IA64] Fix build error: conflicting types for ‘sys_execve’Tony Luck
arch/ia64/kernel/process.c:636: error: conflicting types for ‘sys_execve’ commit d7627467b7a8dd6944885290a03a07ceb28c10eb Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer Missed the declaration of sys_execve in the ia64 asm/unistd.h (perhaps because there is no reason for it to be there ... it might be a left over from the COMPAT code?). 2010-08-18Make do_execve() take a const filename pointerDavid Howells
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles correctly on ARM: arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel(). do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as const should be fine. Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match. This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips. 2010-08-13[IA64] Fix 64-bit atomic routines to return "long"Tony Luck
These have been broken (returning "int") since the dawn of time. But there were no users that needed the whole value until commit 424acaaeb3a3932d64a9b4bd59df6cf72c22d8f3 rwsem: wake queued readers when writer blocks on active read lock made this change: - (rwsem_atomic_update(0, sem) & RWSEM_ACTIVE_MASK)) - /* Someone grabbed the sem already */ + rwsem_atomic_update(0, sem) < RWSEM_WAITING_BIAS) + /* Someone grabbed the sem for write already */ RWSEM_ACTIVE_MASK is 0xffffffffL, so the old code only looked at the low order 32-bits. The new code needs to see all 64 bits. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>

Some nice improvements were made to rwsem in commit: 424acaaeb3a3932d64a9b4bd59df6cf72c22d8f3 rwsem: wake queued readers when writer blocks on active read lock but this change overlooked that ia64 had defined RWSEM_WAITING_BIAS as an unsigned value, while the new code required a signed value (as it is in every other architecture). This fix suggested by the original patch author: Michel Lespinasse. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>

2010-08-11dma-mapping: remove dma_is_consistent APIFUJITA Tomonori
Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely out-of-tree drivers use the API. Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are definitely necessary for drivers. Let's remove this API. 2010-08-11dma-mapping: unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementationsFUJITA Tomonori
dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures defines it as ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN (formally ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN). So we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations. Note that some architectures implement dma_get_cache_alignment wrongly. dma_get_cache_alignment() should return the minimum DMA alignment. So fully-coherent architectures should return 1. This patch also fixes this issue. 2010-08-10tty: Add EXTPROC support for LINEMODEhyc@symas.com
This patch is against the 2.6.34 source. Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989. For historical reference, a good copy of the relevant files can be found here: http://anonsvn.mit.edu/viewvc/krb5/trunk/src/appl/telnet/?pathrev=17741 Signed-off-by: Howard Chu <hyc@symas.com> Cc: Alan Cox <alan@lxorguk.ukuu.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

2010-08-03kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL on the command lineSam Ravnborg
It is now possible to assign options to AS and CC on the command line - which is only used for built-in code. {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL was used both in the top-level Makefile in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify additional options to AS, CC without overriding the original value. Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL that is used by arch specific files and free up {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL so they can be assigned on the command line. All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated. 2010-08-03kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE on the command lineSam Ravnborg
It is now possible to assign options to AS, CC and LD on the command line - which is only used when building modules. {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE was all used both in the top-level Makefile in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify additional options to AS, CC, LD when building modules without overriding the original value. Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE that is used by arch specific files and free up {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE so they can be assigned on the command line. All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated. Note: Previously we had a MODFLAGS variable for both AS and CC. But in favour of consistency this was dropped. So in some cases arch Makefile has one assignmnet replaced by two assignmnets. Note2: MODFLAGS was not documented and is dropped without any notice. I do not expect much/any breakage from this. 2010-08-01KVM: Remove unnecessary divide operationsJoerg Roedel
This patch converts unnecessary divide and modulo operations in the KVM large page related code into logical operations. This allows to convert gfn_t to u64 while not breaking 32 bit builds. Signed-off-by: Joerg Roedel <joerg.roedel@amd.com> Signed-off-by: Marcelo Tosatti <mtosatti@redhat.com>
2010-08-01KVM: ia64: cleanup kvm_ia64_sync_dirty_log()Takuya Yoshikawa
kvm_ia64_sync_dirty_log() is a helper function for kvm_vm_ioctl_get_dirty_log() which copies ia64's arch specific dirty bitmap to general one in memslot. So doing sanity checks in this function is unnatural. We move these checks outside of this and change the prototype appropriately. 2010-08-01KVM: ia64: fix dirty_log_lock spin_lock section not to include get_dirty_log()Takuya Yoshikawa
kvm_get_dirty_log() calls copy_to_user(). So we need to narrow the dirty_log_lock spin_lock section not to include this. Signed-off-by: Takuya Yoshikawa <yoshikawa.takuya@oss.ntt.co.jp> Signed-off-by: Avi Kivity <avi@redhat.com>

As advertised in feature-removal-schedule.txt. Equivalent support is provided by overlapping memory regions. Signed-off-by: Avi Kivity <avi@redhat.com>
2010-08-01KVM: move vcpu locking to dispatcher for generic vcpu ioctlsAvi Kivity
All vcpu ioctls need to be locked, so instead of locking each one specifically we lock at the generic dispatcher. This patch only updates generic ioctls and leaves arch specific ioctls alone. Signed-off-by: Avi Kivity <avi@redhat.com>
2010-07-30PCI: MSI: Restore read_msi_msg_desc(); add get_cached_msi_msg_desc()Ben Hutchings
commit 2ca1af9aa3285c6a5f103ed31ad09f7399fc65d7 "PCI: MSI: Remove unsafe and unnecessary hardware access" changed read_msi_msg_desc() to return the last MSI message written instead of reading it from the device, since it may be called while the device is in a reduced power state. However, the pSeries platform code really does need to read messages from the device, since they are initially written by firmware. Therefore: - Restore the previous behaviour of read_msi_msg_desc() - Add new functions get_cached_msi_msg{,_desc}() which return the last MSI message written - Use the new functions where appropriate Acked-by: Michael Ellerman <michael@ellerman.id.au> Signed-off-by: Ben Hutchings <bhutchings@solarflare.com> Signed-off-by: Jesse Barnes <jbarnes@virtuousgeek.org>
2010-07-27[IA64] increase ia64 static per cpu areaTony Luck
I've been trying to avoid this for a long time ... but per-cpu space has slowly been growing. Tejun has some patches in linux-next that pre-reserve some space (PERCPU_DYNAMIC_EARLY_SIZE) for use before slab comes online ... and this pushes ia64 above the 64K current limit on static percpu space. I could probably squeeze it back under (we are only over by 512 bytes). But I don't think that I'll be able to squeeze it down enough to build a comfortable breathing space - and I don't want to keep nibbling off a dozen bytes here and there every time some generic code bumps us back over the limit. Next available supported page size is 256K ... so we have to quadruple the available space - a bigger jump than I'd like. But perhaps it will be enough to last a few more years before it needs to be increased again. Acked-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>
2010-07-27timkeeping: Fix update_vsyscall to provide wall_to_monotonic offsetJohn Stultz
update_vsyscall() did not provide the wall_to_monotoinc offset, so arch specific implementations tend to reference wall_to_monotonic directly. This limits future cleanups in the timekeeping core, so this patch fixes the update_vsyscall interface to provide wall_to_monotonic, allowing wall_to_monotonic to be made static as planned in Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt Signed-off-by: John Stultz <johnstul@us.ibm.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: Anton Blanchard <anton@samba.org> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> LKML-Reference: <1279068988-21864-7-git-send-email-johnstul@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
