2012-12-19Bury the conditionals from kernel_thread/kernel_execve seriesAl Viro
All architectures have CONFIG_GENERIC_KERNEL_THREAD CONFIG_GENERIC_KERNEL_EXECVE __ARCH_WANT_SYS_EXECVE None of them have __ARCH_WANT_KERNEL_EXECVE and there are only two callers of kernel_execve() (which is a trivial wrapper for do_execve() now) left. Kill the conditionals and make both callers use do_execve(). Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2012-09-28Make most arch asm/module.h files use asm-generic/module.hDavid Howells
Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela, ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally. 2012-07-31ipc: use Kconfig options for __ARCH_WANT_[COMPAT_]IPC_PARSE_VERSIONWill Deacon
Rather than #define the options manually in the architecture code, add Kconfig options for them and select them there instead. This also allows us to select the compat IPC version parsing automatically for platforms using the old compat IPC interface. 2012-05-21timers: Fixup the Kconfig consolidation falloutThomas Gleixner
Sigh, I missed to check which architecture Kconfig files actually include the core Kconfig file. There are a few which did not. So we broke them. Instead of adding the includes to those, we are better off to move the include to init/Kconfig like we did already with irqs and others. This does not change anything for the architectures using the old style periodic timer mode. It just solves the build wreckage there. For those architectures which use the clock events infrastructure it moves the include of the core Kconfig file to "General setup" which is a way more logical place than having it at random locations specified by the architecture specific Kconfigs. 2011-10-04time: Cleanup old CONFIG_GENERIC_TIME references that snuck inJohn Stultz
Awhile back I removed all the CONFIG_GENERIC_TIME referecnes as the last of the non-GENERIC_TIME arches were converted. 2011-01-13kernel: clean up USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERSAmerigo Wang
For arch which needs USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, it has to select USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, rather than leaving a choice to user, since they don't provide their own implementions. Also, move on_each_cpu() to kernel/smp.c, it is strange to put it in kernel/softirq.c. For arch which doesn't use USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, e.g. blackfin, only on_each_cpu() is compiled. 2008-10-20container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley
This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. 2008-05-11BKL: revert back to the old spinlock implementationLinus Torvalds
The generic semaphore rewrite had a huge performance regression on AIM7 (and potentially other BKL-heavy benchmarks) because the generic semaphores had been rewritten to be simple to understand and fair. The latter, in particular, turns a semaphore-based BKL implementation into a mess of scheduling. The attempt to fix the performance regression failed miserably (see the previous commit 00b41ec2611dc98f87f30753ee00a53db648d662 'Revert "semaphore: fix"'), and so for now the simple and sane approach is to instead just go back to the old spinlock-based BKL implementation that never had any issues like this. This patch also has the advantage of being reported to fix the regression completely according to Yanmin Zhang, unlike the semaphore hack which still left a couple percentage point regression. As a spinlock, the BKL obviously has the potential to be a latency issue, but it's not really any different from any other spinlock in that respect. We do want to get rid of the BKL asap, but that has been the plan for several years. These days, the biggest users are in the tty layer (open/release in particular) and Alan holds out some hope: "tty release is probably a few months away from getting cured - I'm afraid it will almost certainly be the very last user of the BKL in tty to get fixed as it depends on everything else being sanely locked." so while we're not there yet, we do have a plan of action.
