2011-05-24x86-64: Add time to vDSOAndy Lutomirski
The only fast implementation of time(2) we expose is through the vsyscall page and we want to get userspace to stop using the vsyscall page. So make it available through the vDSO as well. This is essentially a cut-n-paste job. Signed-off-by: Andy Lutomirski <luto@mit.edu> Cc: Andi Kleen <andi@firstfloor.org> Cc: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: "David S. 2011-05-24x86-64: Clean up vdso/kernel shared variablesAndy Lutomirski
Variables that are shared between the vdso and the kernel are currently a bit of a mess. They are each defined with their own magic, they are accessed differently in the kernel, the vsyscall page, and the vdso, and one of them (vsyscall_clock) doesn't even really exist. This changes them all to use a common mechanism. All of them are delcared in vvar.h with a fixed address (validated by the linker script). In the kernel (as before), they look like ordinary read-write variables. In the vsyscall page and the vdso, they are accessed through a new macro VVAR, which gives read-only access. The vdso is now loaded verbatim into memory without any fixups. As a side bonus, access from the vdso is faster because a level of indirection is removed. While we're at it, pack jiffies and vgetcpu_mode into the same cacheline. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: new layoutRoland McGrath
This revamps the vDSO linker script to lay things out with the best packing of the data and good, separate alignment of the code. The rigid layout using VDSO_TEXT_OFFSET no longer matters to the kernel. I've moved the layout parts of the linker script into a new include file, vdso-layout.lds.S; this is in preparation for sharing the script for the 32-bit vDSO builds too. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: generate vdso-syms.ldsRoland McGrath
This patch adds a new way of extracting symbols from the built vDSO image. This is much simpler and less fragile than using ld -R; it removes the need to control the DSO layout quite so exactly. I was clearly unduly distracted by clever ld uses when I did the original vDSO implementation. 2007-10-17x86: vdso linker script cleanupRoland McGrath
I can't see the reason ". = VDSO_PRELINK + 0x900;" was ever there in the linker script for the x86_64 vDSO. I can't find anything that depends on this magic offset, or that should care at all about the particular location of of the .data section (all from vvar.c) in the vDSO image. If it is really desireable to place .data at 0x900, then it should be after all the other sections so they fill in the space up to 0x900. This removes the 0x900 magic and cleans up the output sections generally in the vDSO linker script. This saves a few hundred bytes in the size of the vDSO file, bringing it back well under 4kb total so that its vma only needs one page.
