2013-02-16ARM: 7649/1: mm: mm->context.id fix for big-endianBen Dooks
Since the new ASID code in b5466f8728527a05a493cc4abe9e6f034a1bbaab ("ARM: mm: remove IPI broadcasting on ASID rollover") was changed to use 64bit operations it has broken the BE operation due to an issue with the MM code accessing sub-fields of mm->context.id. When running in BE mode we see the values in mm->context.id are stored with the highest value first, so the LDR in the arch/arm/mm/proc-macros.S reads the wrong part of this field. To resolve this, change the LDR in the mmid macro to load from +4. 2013-02-16ARM: 7646/1: mm: use static_vm for managing static mapped areasJoonsoo Kim
A static mapped area is ARM-specific, so it is better not to use generic vmalloc data structure, that is, vmlist and vmlist_lock for managing static mapped area. And it causes some needless overhead and reducing this overhead is better idea. Now, we have newly introduced static_vm infrastructure. With it, we don't need to iterate all mapped areas. Instead, we just iterate static mapped areas. It helps to reduce an overhead of finding matched area. And architecture dependency on vmalloc layer is removed, so it will help to maintainability for vmalloc layer. 2013-02-16ARM: 7645/1: ioremap: introduce an infrastructure for static mapped areaJoonsoo Kim
In current implementation, we used ARM-specific flag, that is, VM_ARM_STATIC_MAPPING, for distinguishing ARM specific static mapped area. The purpose of static mapped area is to re-use static mapped area when entire physical address range of the ioremap request can be covered by this area. This implementation causes needless overhead for some cases. For example, assume that there is only one static mapped area and vmlist has 300 areas. Every time we call ioremap, we check 300 areas for deciding whether it is matched or not. Moreover, even if there is no static mapped area and vmlist has 300 areas, every time we call ioremap, we check 300 areas in now. If we construct a extra list for static mapped area, we can eliminate above mentioned overhead. With a extra list, if there is one static mapped area, we just check only one area and proceed next operation quickly. In fact, it is not a critical problem, because ioremap is not frequently used. But reducing overhead is better idea. Another reason for doing this work is for removing architecture dependency on vmalloc layer. I think that vmlist and vmlist_lock is internal data structure for vmalloc layer. Some codes for debugging and stat inevitably use vmlist and vmlist_lock. But it is preferable that they are used as least as possible in outside of vmalloc.c Now, I introduce an ARM-specific infrastructure for static mapped area. In the following patch, we will use this and resolve above mentioned problem. 2013-02-16perf/x86/amd: Enable northbridge performance counters on AMD family 15hJacob Shin
On AMD family 15h processors, there are 4 new performance counters (in addition to 6 core performance counters) that can be used for counting northbridge events (i.e. DRAM accesses). Their bit fields are almost identical to the core performance counters. However, unlike the core performance counters, these MSRs are shared between multiple cores (that share the same northbridge). We will reuse the same code path as existing family 10h northbridge event constraints handler logic to enforce this sharing. This reverts commit 9d02b43dee0d7fb18dfb13a00915550b1a3daa9f. We are doing this b/c on 32-bit PVonHVM with older hypervisors (Xen 4.1) it ends up bothing up the start_info. This is bad b/c we use it for the time keeping, and the timekeeping code loops forever - as the version field never changes. Olaf says to revert it, so lets do that. Commit cb57a2b4cff7edf2a4e32c0163200e9434807e0a ("x86-32: Export kernel_stack_pointer() for modules") added an include of the module.h header in conjunction with adding an EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL of kernel_stack_pointer. But module.h should be avoided for simple exports, since it in turn includes the world. Swap the module.h for export.h instead. We are getting a number of warnings about the use of the deprecated bus_to_virt function in drivers using the ARM ISA DMA API: drivers/parport/parport_pc.c: In function 'parport_pc_fifo_write_block_dma': drivers/parport/parport_pc.c:622:3: warning: 'bus_to_virt' is deprecated (declared at arch/arm/include/asm/memory.h:253) [-Wdeprecated-declarations] This is only because that function gets used by the inline set_dma_addr() helper. We know that any driver for the ISA DMA API is correctly using the DMA addresses, so we can change this to use the __bus_to_virt() function instead, which does not warn. After this, there are no remaining drivers that are used on any defconfigs on ARM using virt_to_bus or bus_to_virt, with the exception of the OSS sound driver. That driver is only used on RiscPC, NetWinder and Shark, so we can set ARCH_NO_VIRT_TO_BUS on all other platforms and hide the deprecated functions, which is far more effective than marking them as deprecated, in order to avoid any new users of that code. The way to fix this is to realize that the we can only relay on the registers that IRET restores. The two that are guaranteed are the %cs and %ss as they are always fixed GDT selectors. Also they are inaccessible from user mode - so they cannot be altered. This is the approach taken in this patch. Another alternative option suggested by Jan would be to relay on the subtle realization that using the %ebp or %esp relative references uses the %ss segment. In which case we could switch from using %eax to %ebp and would not need the %ss over-rides. That would also require one extra instruction to compensate for the one place where the register is used as scaled index. However Andrew pointed out that is too subtle and if further work was to be done in this code-path it could escape folks attention and lead to accidents.
