2007-10-15Add dcr_host_t.base in dcr_read()/dcr_write()Michael Ellerman
Now that all users of dcr_read()/dcr_write() add the dcr_host_t.base, we can save them the trouble and do it in dcr_read()/dcr_write(). As some background to why we just went through all this jiggery-pokery, benh sayeth: Initially the goal of the dcr_read/dcr_write routines was to operate like mfdcr/mtdcr which take absolute DCR numbers. The reason is that on 4xx hardware, indirect DCR access is a pain (goes through a table of instructions) and it's useful to have the compiler resolve an absolute DCR inline. We decided that wasn't worth the API bastardisation since most places where absolute DCR values are used are low level 4xx-only code which may as well continue using mfdcr/mtdcr, while the new API is designed for device "instances" that can exist on 4xx and Axon type platforms and may be located at variable DCR offsets. 2007-10-15Use dcr_host_t.base in ibm_emac_malMichael Ellerman
This requires us to do a sort-of fake dcr_map(), so that base is set properly. This will be fixed/removed when the device-tree-aware emac driver is merged. Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman <michael@ellerman.id.au> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>
2007-10-10ibm_emac: Convert to use napi_struct independent of struct net_deviceRoland Dreier
Commit da3dedd9 ("[NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects.") changed the interface to NAPI polling. Fix up the ibm_emac driver so that it works with this new interface. This is actually a nice cleanup because ibm_emac is one of the drivers that wants to have multiple NAPI structures for a single net_device. Tested with the internal MAC of a PowerPC 440SPe SoC with an AMCC 'Yucca' evaluation board. Signed-off-by: Roland Dreier <rolandd@cisco.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>
2007-10-10Device tree aware EMAC driverDavid Gibson
Based on BenH's earlier work, this is a new version of the EMAC driver for the built-in ethernet found on PowerPC 4xx embedded CPUs. The same ASIC is also found in the Axon bridge chip. This new version is designed to work in the arch/powerpc tree, using the device tree to probe the device, rather than the old and ugly arch/ppc OCP layer. This driver is designed to sit alongside the old driver (that lies in drivers/net/ibm_emac and this one in drivers/net/ibm_newemac). The old driver is left in place to support arch/ppc until arch/ppc itself reaches its final demise (not too long now, with luck). This driver still has a number of things that could do with cleaning up, but I think they can be fixed up after merging. Specifically: - Should be adjusted to properly use the dma mapping API. Axon needs this. - Probe logic needs reworking, in conjuction with the general probing code for of_platform devices. The dependencies here between EMAC, MAL, ZMII etc. make this complicated. At present, it usually works, because we initialize and register the sub-drivers before the EMAC driver itself, and (being in driver code) runs after the devices themselves have been instantiated from the device tree. 2007-10-10[ETHTOOL] Provide default behaviors for a few ethtool sub-ioctlsJeff Garzik
For the operations get-tx-csum get-sg get-tso get-ufo the default ethtool_op_xxx behavior is fine for all drivers, so we permit op==NULL to imply the default behavior. This provides a more uniform behavior across all drivers, eliminating ethtool(8) "ioctl not supported" errors on older drivers that had not been updated for the latest sub-ioctls. The ethtool_op_xxx() functions are left exported, in case anyone wishes to call them directly from a driver-private implementation -- a not-uncommon case. Should an ethtool_op_xxx() helper remain unused for a while, except by net/core/ethtool.c, we can un-export it at a later date. 2007-05-18ibm_emac: improved PHY supportEugene Surovegin
Original patch is from Jeff Haran <jharan@brocade.com> with my minor style fixes. His comments follow: The first problem was in the function that configures the PHY for autonegotiation, genmii_setup_aneg(). The original code does a read/modify/write of the autonegotiation advertizement register (reg 4), followed by a read/modify/write of the control register (reg 0). While the original code follows the proper procedure as per reading the IEEE specs, what I found is that on at least one PHY model (National DP83843) the read of the control register comes back with the soft reset bit set (bit 15). Because of the read/modify/write operation, this causes the write to write a 1 back to the reset bit, which initiates a software reset of the PHY. This software reset causes the PHY to return to its power up state which advertizes all modes of operation, thus negating the write to the autoneg advertizement register. The modification is to spin reading the control register until the soft reset bit is clear before doing the modify/write. The second problem was in the function that configures the PHY for forced operation, genmii_setup_forced(). The original code initiates a software reset operation via a write of a 1 to bit 15 of the control register (reg 0), but then proceeds to do a second write to that same register without waiting until that reset bit is cleared by the PHY itself (which according to the IEEE specs indicates that the PHY reset is complete). This is a violation of how one is supposed to use this software reset feature of these PHYs and I believe was the cause of mysterious, difficult to reproduce link failures that we've observed on some of our systems that use this driver. The fix is to modify the function so that it spins waiting for the reset bit to clear after doing the soft reset and before doing the subsequent write. 2007-05-03PCI: Cleanup the includes of <linux/pci.h>Jean Delvare
I noticed that many source files include <linux/pci.h> while they do not appear to need it. Here is an attempt to clean it all up. In order to find all possibly affected files, I searched for all files including <linux/pci.h> but without any other occurence of "pci" or "PCI". I removed the include statement from all of these, then I compiled an allmodconfig kernel on both i386 and x86_64 and fixed the false positives manually. My tests covered 66% of the affected files, so there could be false positives remaining. 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Convert skb->tail to sk_buff_data_tArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4 64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN... :-) Many calculations that previously required that skb->{transport,network, mac}_header be first converted to a pointer now can be done directly, being meaningful as offsets or pointers. 2007-02-14[PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). 2006-12-26PHY probe not working properly for ibm_emac (PPC4xx)Hynek Petrak
I have a system with AMCC PowerPC 405EP and PHY Intel LXT971A. Linux 2.6.18.3 is not able to detect the PHY ID correctly. The PHY ID detected is 0, but should be 0x1d. This is because phy_read() (__emac_mdio_read() resp.) from drivers/net/ibm_emac/ibm_emac_core.c might return -ETIMEDOUT or -EREMOTEIO on error. This is ignored inside the int mii_phy_probe(struct mii_phy *phy, int address) from drivers/net/ibm_emac/ibm_emac_phy.c as the return value is assigned to an u32 variable. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. TX ring debug printouts show complete mess when this happens, probably hardware collision handling doesn't work quite well in this mode. This has finally bitten me on one of our systems (heavy network traffic during start up, RX channel is stopped several times to configure multicast list). Graceful channel stop can take up to 1 frame time, so I've added device specific timeout counter which depends on current link speed and calls to udelay() to really wait required amount of time before giving up. 2005-10-28[PATCH] New PowerPC 4xx on-chip ethernet controller driverEugene Surovegin
This patch replaces current PowerPC 4xx EMAC driver with new, re-written from the scratch version. This patch is quite big (~234K) because there is virtualy 0% of common code between old and new version. New driver uses NAPI, it solves stability problems under heavy packet load and low memory, corrects chip register access and fixes numerous small bugs I don't even remember now. This patch has been tested on all supported in 2.6 PPC 4xx boards. It's been used in production for almost a year now on custom 4xx hardware. PPC32 specific parts are already upstream. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
