2011-03-31drivers/net: Remove IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM flag from network driversJavier Martinez Canillas
The IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM flag is marked as deprecated and will be removed. Every input point to the kernel's entropy pool have to better document the type of entropy source it is. drivers/char/random.c now implements a set of interfaces that can be used for devices to collect enviromental noise. IRQF_SAMPLE_RANDOM will be replaced with these add_*_randomness exported functions. Network drivers are not a good source of entropy. They use as a source of entropy essentially a remote host. Which means that the source of entropy can be potentially controlled by an attacker. Also, with heavy workloads the entropy decreases due to less hardware interrupts happening thanks to irq mitigation and NAPI. If a system relies in its network interface as a entropy source it has a false sense of security. Systems that don't have devices whose drivers are good sources of entropy, should either use a hardware random number generator or feed the kernel's entropy pool from userspace using other sources of entropy such as EGD, video_entropyd, timer_entropyd and audio-entropyd. 2011-02-28macb: don't use platform_set_drvdata() on a net_deviceJamie Iles
Commit 71d6429 (Driver core: convert platform_{get,set}_drvdata to static inline functions) now triggers a warning in the macb network driver: CC drivers/net/macb.o drivers/net/macb.c: In function ‘macb_mii_init’: drivers/net/macb.c:263: warning: passing argument 1 of ‘platform_set_drvdata’ from incompatible pointer type include/linux/platform_device.h:138: note: expected ‘struct platform_device *’ but argument is of type ‘struct net_device *’ Use dev_set_drvdata() on the device embedded in the net_device instead. 2010-10-25macb: Don't re-enable interrupts while in polling modeJoshua Hoke
On a busy network, the macb driver could get stuck in the interrupt handler, quickly triggering the watchdog, due to a confluence of factors: 1. macb_poll re-enables interrupts unconditionally, even when it will be called again because it exhausted its rx budget 2. macb_interrupt only disables interrupts after scheduling macb_poll, but scheduling fails when macb_poll is already scheduled because it didn't call napi_complete 3. macb_interrupt loops until the interrupt status register is clear, which will never happen in this case if the driver doesn't disable the RX interrupt Since macb_interrupt runs in interrupt context, this effectively locks up the machine, triggering the hardware watchdog. This issue was readily reproducible on a flooded network with a modified 2.6.27.48 kernel. The same problem appears to still be in the 2.6.36-rc8 driver code, so I am submitting this patch against that version. I have not tested this version of the patch except to make sure the kernel compiles. Signed-off-by: Joshua Hoke <joshua.hoke@sixnet.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-09-03drivers/net: avoid some skb->ip_summed initializationsEric Dumazet

2010-07-19net: preserve ifreq parameter when calling generic phy_mii_ioctl().Richard Cochran
The phy_mii_ioctl() function unnecessarily throws away the original ifreq. We need access to the ifreq in order to support PHYs that can perform hardware time stamping. Two maverick drivers filter the ioctl commands passed to phy_mii_ioctl(). This is unnecessary since phylib will check the command in any case. 2009-08-24drivers/net: fixed drivers that support netpoll use ndo_start_xmit()Dongdong Deng
The NETPOLL API requires that interrupts remain disabled in netpoll_send_skb(). The use of "A functions set" in the NETPOLL API callbacks causes the interrupts to get enabled and can lead to kernel instability. The solution is to use "B functions set" to prevent the irqs from getting enabled while in netpoll_send_skb(). A functions set: local_irq_disable()/local_irq_enable() spin_lock_irq()/spin_unlock_irq() spin_trylock_irq()/spin_unlock_irq() B functions set: local_irq_save()/local_irq_restore() spin_lock_irqsave()/spin_unlock_irqrestore() spin_trylock_irqsave()/spin_unlock_irqrestore() Signed-off-by: Dongdong Deng <dongdong.deng@windriver.com> Acked-by: Matt Mackall <mpm@selenic.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-04-17macb: process the RX ring regardless of interrupt statusErik Waling
Suppose that we receive lots of frames, start processing them, but exhaust our budget so that we return before we had a chance to look at all of them. Then, when the network layer calls us again, we will only continue processing the buffers if the REC bit was set in the mean time, which it might not be if there was a brief pause in the flow of packets. If this happens, we'll simply display a warning and call netif_rx_complete() with potentially lots of unprocessed packets in the RX ring... Fix this by scanning the ring no matter what flags are set in the interrupt status register. 2009-01-20macb: avoid lockup when TGO during underrunRichard Röjfors
In rare cases when an underrun occur, all macb buffers where consumed and the netif_queue was stopped infinitely. This happens then the TGO (transfer ongoing) bit in the TSR is set (and UND). It seems like clening up after the underrun makes the driver and the macb hardware end up in an inconsistent state. The result of this is that in the following calls to macb_tx no TX buffers are released -> the netif_queue was stopped, and never woken up again. The solution is to disable the transmitter, if TGO is set, before clening up after the underrun, and re-enable the transmitter when the cleaning up is done. 2008-07-22netdev: bunch of drivers: avoid WARN at net/core/dev.c:1328Anton Vorontsov
The drivers were touching net queue before it has been started, so without this patch, the drivers will potentially WARN at net/core/dev.c:1328. I don't have the hardware for the drivers below, so this patch is untested, and thus should be carefully peer reviewed. tc35815.c au1000_eth.c bfin_mac.c macb.c ^ The four drivers are using phylib, they're calling netif_start_queue() in open() callback. So trivially remove netif_tx_schedule_all(). Phylib will handle netif_carrier_*(). cpmac.c fec_mpc52xx.c fs_enet/fs_enet-main.c sh_eth.c ^ The same as above, but these were also needlessly calling netif_carrier_*() functions. So removed queue calls and also remove carrier calls, since phylib will handle it. fs_enet-main.c also didn't call netif_start_queue() at open(), this is fixed now. 2008-04-25net drivers: fix platform driver hotplug/coldplugKay Sievers
Since 43cc71eed1250755986da4c0f9898f9a635cb3bf, the platform modalias is prefixed with "platform:". Add MODULE_ALIAS() to the hotpluggable network platform drivers, to re-enable auto loading. NOTE: didn't change drivers/net/fs_enet/fs_enet-main.c "old binding" support. That looks problematic in the first place (it even uses the ancient "struct device_driver" binding scheme for platform_bus!) and I suspect it will vanish soonish when arch/powerpc rules the world. macb devices are only found integrated on SoCs, so they can't be hotplugged. Thus, the probe() and exit() functions can be __init and __exit, respectively. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects.Stephen Hemminger
Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several queues. In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the structure representing the poll is independant from the net device itself. The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from: int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget) to int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget) The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the caller upon return. The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data structures. Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures, only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances it may have per-device. With lots of help and suggestions from Rusty Russell, Roland Dreier, Michael Chan, Jeff Garzik, and Jamal Hadi Salim. Bug fixes from Thomas Graf, Roland Dreier, Peter Zijlstra, Joseph Fannin, Scott Wood, Hans J. Koch, and Michael Chan. [ Ported to current tree and all drivers converted.
