All these are instances of #define NAME value; or #define NAME(params_opt) value; These of course fail to build when used in contexts like if(foo $OP NAME) while(bar $OP NAME) and may silently generate the wrong code in contexts such as foo = NAME + 1; /* foo = value; + 1; */ bar = NAME - 1; /* bar = value; - 1; */ baz = NAME & quux; /* baz = value; & quux; */ Reported on comp.lang.c, Message-ID: <ab0d55fe-25e5-482b-811e-c475aa6065c3@c29g2000yqd.googlegroups.com> Initial analysis of the dangers provided by Keith Thompson in that thread. There are many more instances of more complicated macros having unnecessary trailing semicolons, but this pile seems to be all of the cases of simple values suffering from the problem. (Thus things that are likely to be found in one of the contexts above, more complicated ones aren't.) The third parameter of module_param is supposed to represent sysfs file permissions. 2011-04-29ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny
This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. Commit 5fd29d6ccbc98884569d6f3105aeca70858b3e0f ("printk: clean up handling of log-levels and newlines") changed printk semantics. printk lines with multiple KERN_<level> prefixes are no longer emitted as before the patch. <level> is now included in the output on each additional use. The generic packet receive code takes care of setting netdev->last_rx when necessary, for the sake of the bonding ARP monitor. Drivers need not do it any more. All fine with that, they're static, however for doing stats on how often which driver hits the timeout it's a tad unfortunate. 2008-04-17natsemi: fix MMIO for PPC 44x platformsSergei Shtylyov
The driver stores the PCI resource address into 'unsigned long' variable before calling ioremap() on it. This warrants a kernel oops when the registers are accessed on PPC 44x platforms which (being 32-bit) have PCI memory space mapped beyond 4 GB. The arch/ppc/ kernel has a fixup in ioremap() that creates an illusion of the PCI memory resources are mapped below 4 GB, but arch/powerpc/ code got rid of this trick, having instead CONFIG_RESOURCES_64BIT enabled. The documentation regarding synchronisation at the head of the natsemi driver was badly bitrotted so replace it with a general statement about the techniques used which is less likely to bitrot. Also remove the note saying these chips are uncommon - it makes little difference but they were used in a number of laptops and at least one mass market PCI ethernet card. The natsemi driver has a define NATSEMI_TIMER_FREQ which looks like it controls the normal frequency of the chip poll timer but in fact only takes effect for the first run of the timer. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects.Stephen Hemminger
Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several queues. In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the structure representing the poll is independant from the net device itself. The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from: int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget) to int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget) The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the caller upon return. The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data structures. Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures, only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances it may have per-device. With lots of help and suggestions from Rusty Russell, Roland Dreier, Michael Chan, Jeff Garzik, and Jamal Hadi Salim. The warning drivers/net/natsemi.c: In function ‘natsemi_remove1’: drivers/net/natsemi.c:3222: warning: ignoring return value of ‘device_create_file’, declared with attribute warn_unused_result is oft-ignored, even though at close inspection one notices this occurs in the /remove/ function, not normally where creation occurs.
