2007-10-10[NET]: Make the loopback device per network namespace.Eric W. Biederman
This patch makes loopback_dev per network namespace. Adding code to create a different loopback device for each network namespace and adding the code to free a loopback device when a network namespace exits. This patch modifies all users the loopback_dev so they access it as init_net.loopback_dev, keeping all of the code compiling and working. A later pass will be needed to update the users to use something other than the initial network namespace. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2007-10-10[NET]: Dynamically allocate the loopback device, part 1.Daniel Lezcano
This patch replaces all occurences to the static variable loopback_dev to a pointer loopback_dev. That provides the mindless, trivial, uninteressting change part for the dynamic allocation for the loopback. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Lezcano <dlezcano@fr.ibm.com> Acked-By: Kirill Korotaev <dev@sw.ru> Acked-by: Benjamin Thery <benjamin.thery@bull.net> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make the device list and device lookups per namespace.Eric W. Biederman
This patch makes most of the generic device layer network namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a network namespace variable, and then it picks up a few associated variables. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make packet reception network namespace safeEric W. Biederman
This patch modifies every packet receive function registered with dev_add_pack() to drop packets if they are not from the initial network namespace. This should ensure that the various network stacks do not receive packets in a anything but the initial network namespace until the code has been converted and is ready for them. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespaceEric W. Biederman
This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace. 2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-05-03[NET]: Rework dev_base via list_head (v3)Pavel Emelianov
Cleanup of dev_base list use, with the aim to simplify making device list per-namespace. In almost every occasion, use of dev_base variable and dev->next pointer could be easily replaced by for_each_netdev loop. A few most complicated places were converted to using first_netdev()/next_netdev(). 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Convert skb->tail to sk_buff_data_tArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4 64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN... :-) Many calculations that previously required that skb->{transport,network, mac}_header be first converted to a pointer now can be done directly, being meaningful as offsets or pointers. 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_reset_transport_header(skb)Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo
For the common, open coded 'skb->h.raw = skb->data' operation, so that we can later turn skb->h.raw into a offset, reducing the size of struct sk_buff in 64bit land while possibly keeping it as a pointer on 32bit. This one touches just the most simple cases: skb->h.raw = skb->data; skb->h.raw = {skb_push|[__]skb_pull}() The next ones will handle the slightly more "complex" cases. 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_network_header()Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo
For the places where we need a pointer to the network header, it is still legal to touch skb->nh.raw directly if just adding to, subtracting from or setting it to another layer header. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 7Arjan van de Ven
Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. 2007-02-11[DECNET]: Convert decnet route to use the new dst_entry 'next' pointerEric Dumazet
This patch removes the next pointer from 'struct dn_route.u' union, and renames u.rt_next to u.dst.dn_next. It also moves 'struct flowi' right after 'struct dst_entry' to prepare speedup lookups. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2006-12-03[RTNETLINK]: Add rtnl_put_cacheinfo() to unify some codeThomas Graf
IPv4, IPv6, and DECNet all use struct rta_cacheinfo in a similiar way, therefore rtnl_put_cacheinfo() is added to reuse code. Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-12-03[NETLINK]: Remove unused dst_pid field in netlink_skb_parmsThomas Graf
The destination PID is passed directly to netlink_unicast() respectively netlink_multicast(). Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-12-03[NET]: Rethink mark field in struct flowiThomas Graf
Now that all protocols have been made aware of the mark field it can be moved out of the union thus simplyfing its usage. The config options in the IPv4/IPv6/DECnet subsystems to enable respectively disable mark based routing only obfuscate the code with ifdefs, the cost for the additional comparison in the flow key is insignificant, and most distributions have all these options enabled by default anyway. Therefore it makes sense to remove the config options and enable mark based routing by default. Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-12-03[NET]: Turn nfmark into generic markThomas Graf
nfmark is being used in various subsystems and has become the defacto mark field for all kinds of packets. Therefore it makes sense to rename it to `mark' and remove the dependency on CONFIG_NETFILTER. Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-10-19[DECNET]: Fix input routing bugSteven Whitehouse
This patch fixes a silly bug that has been in the input routing code for some time. It results in trying to send to a node directly when the origin of the packet is via the default router. Its been tested by Alan Kemmerer <alan.kemmerer@mittalsteel.com> who reported the bug and its a fairly obvious fix for a typo. 2006-10-12[NET]: Do not memcmp() over pad bytes of struct flowi.David S. Miller

2006-09-22[NET]: Introduce RTA_TABLE/FRA_TABLE attributesPatrick McHardy
Introduce RTA_TABLE route attribute and FRA_TABLE routing rule attribute to hold 32 bit routing table IDs. Usespace compatibility is provided by continuing to accept and send the rtm_table field, but because of its limited size it can only carry the low 8 bits of the table ID. This implies that if larger IDs are used, _all_ userspace programs using them need to use RTA_TABLE. Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-09-22[DECNET]: Covert rules to use generic codeSteven Whitehouse
This patch converts the DECnet rules code to use the generic rules system created by Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch>. Signed-off-by: Steven Whitehouse <steve@chygwyn.com> Acked-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-08-02[DECNET]: Fix for routing bugPatrick Caulfield
This patch fixes a bug in the DECnet routing code where we were selecting a loopback device in preference to an outward facing device even when the destination was known non-local. This patch should fix the problem. Signed-off-by: Patrick Caulfield <patrick@tykepenguin.com> Signed-off-by: Steven Whitehouse <steve@chygwyn.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2006-06-18[NET]: Clean up skb_linearizeHerbert Xu
The linearisation operation doesn't need to be super-optimised. So we can replace __skb_linearize with __pskb_pull_tail which does the same thing but is more general. Also, most users of skb_linearize end up testing whether the skb is linear or not so it helps to make skb_linearize do just that. Some callers of skb_linearize also use it to copy cloned data, so it's useful to have a new function skb_linearize_cow to copy the data if it's either non-linear or cloned. Last but not least, I've removed the gfp argument since nobody uses it anymore. If it's ever needed we can easily add it back. Misc bugs fixed by this patch: * via-velocity error handling (also, no SG => no frags) Signed-off-by: Herbert Xu <herbert@gondor.apana.org.au> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-03-21[DECNET]: net/decnet/dn_route.c: fix inconsequent NULL checkingAdrian Bunk
The Coverity checker noted this inconsequent NULL checking in dnrt_drop(). Since all callers ensure that NULL isn't passed, we can simply remove the check. Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2006-03-21[DECnet]: Endian annotation and fixes for DECnet.Steven Whitehouse
The typedef for dn_address has been removed in favour of using __le16 or __u16 directly as appropriate. All the DECnet header files are updated accordingly. The byte ordering of dn_eth2dn() and dn_dn2eth() are both changed since just about all their callers wanted network order rather than host order, so the conversion is now done in the functions themselves. Several missed endianess conversions have been picked up during the conversion process. The nh_gw field in struct dn_fib_info has been changed from a 32 bit field to 16 bits as it ought to be. One or two cases of using htons rather than dn_htons in the routing code have been found and fixed. There are still a few warnings to fix, but this patch deals with the important cases. 2005-08-29[NET]: Kill skb->real_devDavid S. Miller
Bonding just wants the device before the skb_bond() decapsulation occurs, so simply pass that original device into packet_type->func() as an argument. It remains to be seen whether we can use this same exact thing to get rid of skb->input_dev as well. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
