2012-07-23decnet: Don't set RTCF_DIRECTSRC.David S. Miller
It's an ipv4 defined route flag, and only ipv4 uses it. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-20net: Document dst->obsolete better.David S. Miller
Add a big comment explaining how the field works, and use defines instead of magic constants for the values assigned to it. Suggested by Joe Perches. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-17net: Pass optional SKB and SK arguments to dst_ops->{update_pmtu,redirect}()David S. Miller
This will be used so that we can compose a full flow key. Even though we have a route in this context, we need more. In the future the routes will be without destination address, source address, etc. keying. One ipv4 route will cover entire subnets, etc. In this environment we have to have a way to possess persistent storage for redirects and PMTU information. This persistent storage will exist in the FIB tables, and that's why we'll need to be able to rebuild a full lookup flow key here. Using that flow key will do a fib_lookup() and create/update the persistent entry. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-12net: Add dummy dst_ops->redirect method where needed.David S. Miller
Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-11rtnetlink: Remove ts/tsage args to rtnl_put_cacheinfo().David S. Miller
Nobody provides non-zero values any longer. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-11net: Don't report route RTT metric value in cache dumps.David S. Miller
We don't maintain it dynamically any longer, so reporting it would be extremely misleading. Report zero instead. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-05decnet: Use neighbours privately in dn_route struct.David S. Miller
This allows an easy conversion away from dst_get_neighbour*(). Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-07-05net: Add optional SKB arg to dst_ops->neigh_lookup().David S. Miller
Causes the handler to use the daddr in the ipv4/ipv6 header when the route gateway is unspecified (local subnet). Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2012-06-27decnet: Do not use RTA_PUT() macrosThomas Graf
Also, no need to trim on nlmsg_put() failure, nothing has been added yet. We also want to use nlmsg_end(), nlmsg_new() and nlmsg_free(). Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2011-12-05net: Rename dst_get_neighbour{, _raw} to dst_get_neighbour_noref{, _raw}.David Miller
To reflect the fact that a refrence is not obtained to the resulting neighbour entry. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Acked-by: Roland Dreier <roland@purestorage.com>
2011-11-26net: Move mtu handling down to the protocol depended handlersSteffen Klassert
We move all mtu handling from dst_mtu() down to the protocol layer. So each protocol can implement the mtu handling in a different manner. Signed-off-by: Steffen Klassert <steffen.klassert@secunet.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-11-26net: Rename the dst_opt default_mtu method to mtuSteffen Klassert
We plan to invoke the dst_opt->default_mtu() method unconditioally from dst_mtu(). So rename the method to dst_opt->mtu() to match the name with the new meaning. Signed-off-by: Steffen Klassert <steffen.klassert@secunet.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-10-31net: Add export.h for EXPORT_SYMBOL/THIS_MODULE to non-modulesPaul Gortmaker
These files are non modular, but need to export symbols using the macros now living in export.h -- call out the include so that things won't break when we remove the implicit presence of module.h from everywhere. Signed-off-by: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
2011-07-18net: Add ->neigh_lookup() operation to dst_opsDavid S. Miller
In the future dst entries will be neigh-less. In that environment we need to have an easy transition point for current users of dst->neighbour outside of the packet output fast path. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-07-18net: Abstract dst->neighbour accesses behind helpers.David S. Miller
dst_{get,set}_neighbour() Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-07-18neigh: Pass neighbour entry to output ops.David S. Miller
This will get us closer to being able to do "neigh stuff" completely independent of the underlying dst_entry for protocols (ipv4/ipv6) that wish to do so. We will also be able to make dst entries neigh-less. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-07-01decnet: Reduce switch/case indentJoe Perches
Make the case labels the same indent as the switch. git diff -w shows differences for line wrapping. (fit multiple lines to 80 columns, join where possible) Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-06-10rtnetlink: Compute and store minimum ifinfo dump sizeGreg Rose
The message size allocated for rtnl ifinfo dumps was limited to a single page. This is not enough for additional interface info available with devices that support SR-IOV and caused a bug in which VF info would not be displayed if more than approximately 40 VFs were created per interface. Implement a new function pointer for the rtnl_register service that will calculate the amount of data required for the ifinfo dump and allocate enough data to satisfy the request. Signed-off-by: Greg Rose <gregory.v.rose@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com>
2011-04-29net: Use non-zero allocations in dst_alloc().David S. Miller
Make dst_alloc() and it's users explicitly initialize the entire entry. The zero'ing done by kmem_cache_zalloc() was almost entirely redundant. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-04-29net: Make dst_alloc() take more explicit initializations.David S. Miller
Now the dst->dev, dev->obsolete, and dst->flags values can be specified as well. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-03-12decnet: Convert to use flowidn where applicable.David S. Miller

2011-03-12net: Put flowi_* prefix on AF independent members of struct flowiDavid S. Miller
I intend to turn struct flowi into a union of AF specific flowi structs. There will be a common structure that each variant includes first, much like struct sock_common. This is the first step to move in that direction. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-03-02xfrm: Return dst directly from xfrm_lookup()David S. Miller
Instead of on the stack. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-03-01xfrm: Kill XFRM_LOOKUP_WAIT flag.David S. Miller
This can be determined from the flow flags instead. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-02-17net: Add initial_ref arg to dst_alloc().David S. Miller
This allows avoiding multiple writes to the initial __refcnt. The most simplest cases of wanting an initial reference of "1" in ipv4 and ipv6 have been converted, the rest have been left along and kept at the existing "0". Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-01-27net: Implement read-only protection and COW'ing of metrics.David S. Miller
Routing metrics are now copy-on-write. Initially a route entry points it's metrics at a read-only location. If a routing table entry exists, it will point there. Else it will point at the all zero metric place-holder called 'dst_default_metrics'. The writeability state of the metrics is stored in the low bits of the metrics pointer, we have two bits left to spare if we want to store more states. For the initial implementation, COW is implemented simply via kmalloc. However future enhancements will change this to place the writable metrics somewhere else, in order to increase sharing. Very likely this "somewhere else" will be the inetpeer cache. Note also that this means that metrics updates may transiently fail if we cannot COW the metrics successfully. But even by itself, this patch should decrease memory usage and increase cache locality especially for routing workloads. In those cases the read-only metric copies stay in place and never get written to. TCP workloads where metrics get updated, and those rare cases where PMTU triggers occur, will take a very slight performance hit. But that hit will be alleviated when the long-term writable metrics move to a more sharable location. Since the metrics storage went from a u32 array of RTAX_MAX entries to what is essentially a pointer, some retooling of the dst_entry layout was necessary. Most importantly, we need to preserve the alignment of the reference count so that it doesn't share cache lines with the read-mostly state, as per Eric Dumazet's alignment assertion checks. The only non-trivial bit here is the move of the 'flags' member into the writeable cacheline. This is OK since we are always accessing the flags around the same moment when we made a modification to the reference count. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-12-14net: Abstract default MTU metric calculation behind an accessor.David S. Miller
Like RTAX_ADVMSS, make the default calculation go through a dst_ops method rather than caching the computation in the routing cache entries. Now dst metrics are pretty much left as-is when new entries are created, thus optimizing metric sharing becomes a real possibility. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-12-13net: Abstract default ADVMSS behind an accessor.David S. Miller
Make all RTAX_ADVMSS metric accesses go through a new helper function, dst_metric_advmss(). Leave the actual default metric as "zero" in the real metric slot, and compute the actual default value dynamically via a new dst_ops AF specific callback. For stacked IPSEC routes, we use the advmss of the path which preserves existing behavior. Unlike ipv4/ipv6, DecNET ties the advmss to the mtu and thus updates advmss on pmtu updates. This inconsistency in advmss handling results in more raw metric accesses than I wish we ended up with. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-12-09net: Abstract away all dst_entry metrics accesses.David S. Miller
Use helper functions to hide all direct accesses, especially writes, to dst_entry metrics values. This will allow us to: 1) More easily change how the metrics are stored. 2) Implement COW for metrics. In particular this will help us put metrics into the inetpeer cache if that is what we end up doing. We can make the _metrics member a pointer instead of an array, initially have it point at the read-only metrics in the FIB, and then on the first set grab an inetpeer entry and point the _metrics member there. 2010-11-12ipv4: Make rt->fl.iif tests lest obscure.David S. Miller
When we test rt->fl.iif against zero, we're seeing if it's an output or an input route. Make that explicit with some helper functions. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-11-08decnet: RCU conversion and get rid of dev_base_lockEric Dumazet
While tracking dev_base_lock users, I found decnet used it in dnet_select_source(), but for a wrong purpose: Writers only hold RTNL, not dev_base_lock, so readers must use RCU if they cannot use RTNL. Adds an rcu_head in struct dn_ifaddr and handle proper RCU management. Adds __rcu annotation in dn_route as well. 2010-10-11net dst: use a percpu_counter to track entriesEric Dumazet
struct dst_ops tracks number of allocated dst in an atomic_t field, subject to high cache line contention in stress workload. Switch to a percpu_counter, to reduce number of time we need to dirty a central location. Place it on a separate cache line to avoid dirtying read only fields. Stress test : (Sending 160.000.000 UDP frames, IP route cache disabled, dual E5540 @2.53GHz, 32bit kernel, FIB_TRIE, SLUB/NUMA) Before: real 0m51.179s user 0m15.329s sys 10m15.942s After: real 0m45.570s user 0m15.525s sys 9m56.669s With a small reordering of struct neighbour fields, subject of a following patch, (to separate refcnt from other read mostly fields) real 0m41.841s user 0m15.261s sys 8m45.949s Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-05-18net: Remove unnecessary returns from void function()sJoe Perches
This patch removes from net/ (but not any netfilter files) all the unnecessary return; statements that precede the last closing brace of void functions. It does not remove the returns that are immediately preceded by a label as gcc doesn't like that. Done via: $ grep -rP --include=*.[ch] -l "return;\n}" net/ | \ xargs perl -i -e 'local $/ ; while (<>) { s/\n[ \t\n]+return;\n}/\n}/g; print; }' Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-02-25net: Add checking to rcu_dereference() primitivesPaul E. McKenney
Update rcu_dereference() primitives to use new lockdep-based checking. The rcu_dereference() in __in6_dev_get() may be protected either by rcu_read_lock() or RTNL, per Eric Dumazet. The rcu_dereference() in __sk_free() is protected by the fact that it is never reached if an update could change it. Check for this by using rcu_dereference_check() to verify that the struct sock's ->sk_wmem_alloc counter is zero. Acked-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Acked-by: David S. 2009-09-22mm: replace various uses of num_physpages by totalram_pagesJan Beulich
Sizing of memory allocations shouldn't depend on the number of physical pages found in a system, as that generally includes (perhaps a huge amount of) non-RAM pages. The amount of what actually is usable as storage should instead be used as a basis here.
