2016-08-04dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski
The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. Semantic patches for this change (at least most of them): virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; @@ f(..., - struct dma_attrs *attrs + unsigned long attrs , ...) { ... } @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) and // Options: --all-includes virtual patch virtual context @r@ identifier f, attrs; type t; @@ t f(..., struct dma_attrs *attrs); @@ identifier r.f; @@ f(..., - NULL + 0 ) Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1468399300-5399-2-git-send-email-k.kozlowski@samsung.com Signed-off-by: Krzysztof Kozlowski <k.kozlowski@samsung.com> Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> Acked-by: Mark Salter <msalter@redhat.com> [c6x] Acked-by: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> [cris] Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> [drm] Reviewed-by: Bart Van Assche <bart.vanassche@sandisk.com> Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Fabien Dessenne <fabien.dessenne@st.com> [bdisp] Reviewed-by: Marek Szyprowski <m.szyprowski@samsung.com> [vb2-core] Acked-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> [xen] Acked-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> [xen swiotlb] Acked-by: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de> [iommu] Acked-by: Richard Kuo <rkuo@codeaurora.org> [hexagon] Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Acked-by: Gerald Schaefer <gerald.schaefer@de.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Bjorn Andersson <bjorn.andersson@linaro.org> Acked-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no> [avr32] Acked-by: Vineet Gupta <vgupta@synopsys.com> [arc] Acked-by: Robin Murphy <robin.murphy@arm.com> [arm64 and dma-iommu] Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This patch swaps the mix of tabs and space for alignment of comment after code to use spaces only. Also document why recvmmsg was defined twice in the syscall_table.S table, but only once in unistd.h. In short, wired in the table by generic arch patch, but forgotten in unistd.h (review slip).
2016-07-29avr32: wire up preadv2 and pwritev2 syscallsHans-Christian Noren Egtvedt
This patch wires up the new preadv2 and pwritev2 syscall on AVR32. On AVR32, all parameters beyond the 5th are passed on the stack. System calls don't use the stack -- they borrow a callee-saved register instead. This means that syscalls that take 6 parameters must be called through a stub that pushes the last parameter on the stack. Signed-off-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no>

2016-06-25tree wide: get rid of __GFP_REPEAT for order-0 allocations part IMichal Hocko
This is the third version of the patchset previously sent [1]. I have basically only rebased it on top of 4.7-rc1 tree and dropped "dm: get rid of superfluous gfp flags" which went through dm tree. I am sending it now because it is tree wide and chances for conflicts are reduced considerably when we want to target rc2. I plan to send the next step and rename the flag and move to a better semantic later during this release cycle so we will have a new semantic ready for 4.8 merge window hopefully. Motivation: While working on something unrelated I've checked the current usage of __GFP_REPEAT in the tree. It seems that a majority of the usage is and always has been bogus because __GFP_REPEAT has always been about costly high order allocations while we are using it for order-0 or very small orders very often. It seems that a big pile of them is just a copy&paste when a code has been adopted from one arch to another. I think it makes some sense to get rid of them because they are just making the semantic more unclear. Please note that GFP_REPEAT is documented as * __GFP_REPEAT: Try hard to allocate the memory, but the allocation attempt * _might_ fail. This depends upon the particular VM implementation. while !costly requests have basically nofail semantic. So one could reasonably expect that order-0 request with __GFP_REPEAT will not loop for ever. This is not implemented right now though. I would like to move on with __GFP_REPEAT and define a better semantic for it. $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT origin/master | wc -l 111 $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT | wc -l 36 So we are down to the third after this patch series. The remaining places really seem to be relying on __GFP_REPEAT due to large allocation requests. This still needs some double checking which I will do later after all the simple ones are sorted out. I am touching a lot of arch specific code here and I hope I got it right but as a matter of fact I even didn't compile test for some archs as I do not have cross compiler for them. Patches should be quite trivial to review for stupid compile mistakes though. The tricky parts are usually hidden by macro definitions and thats where I would appreciate help from arch maintainers. [1] http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1461849846-27209-1-git-send-email-mhocko@kernel.org This patch (of 19): __GFP_REPEAT has a rather weak semantic but since it has been introduced around 2.6.12 it has been ignored for low order allocations. Yet we have the full kernel tree with its usage for apparently order-0 allocations. This is really confusing because __GFP_REPEAT is explicitly documented to allow allocation failures which is a weaker semantic than the current order-0 has (basically nofail). Let's simply drop __GFP_REPEAT from those places. This would allow to identify place which really need allocator to retry harder and formulate a more specific semantic for what the flag is supposed to do actually. 2016-06-16locking/atomic, arch/avr32: Implement atomic_fetch_{add,sub,and,or,xor}()Peter Zijlstra
Implement FETCH-OP atomic primitives, these are very similar to the existing OP-RETURN primitives we already have, except they return the value of the atomic variable _before_ modification. This is especially useful for irreversible operations -- such as bitops (because it becomes impossible to reconstruct the state prior to modification). 2016-05-21printk/nmi: generic solution for safe printk in NMIPetr Mladek
printk() takes some locks and could not be used a safe way in NMI context. The chance of a deadlock is real especially when printing stacks from all CPUs. This particular problem has been addressed on x86 by the commit a9edc8809328 ("x86/nmi: Perform a safe NMI stack trace on all CPUs"). The patchset brings two big advantages. First, it makes the NMI backtraces safe on all architectures for free. Second, it makes all NMI messages almost safe on all architectures (the temporary buffer is limited. We still should keep the number of messages in NMI context at minimum). Note that there already are several messages printed in NMI context: WARN_ON(in_nmi()), BUG_ON(in_nmi()), anything being printed out from MCE handlers. These are not easy to avoid. This patch reuses most of the code and makes it generic. It is useful for all messages and architectures that support NMI. The alternative printk_func is set when entering and is reseted when leaving NMI context. It queues IRQ work to copy the messages into the main ring buffer in a safe context. __printk_nmi_flush() copies all available messages and reset the buffer. Then we could use a simple cmpxchg operations to get synchronized with writers. There is also used a spinlock to get synchronized with other flushers. We do not longer use seq_buf because it depends on external lock. It would be hard to make all supported operations safe for a lockless use. It would be confusing and error prone to make only some operations safe. The code is put into separate printk/nmi.c as suggested by Steven Rostedt. It needs a per-CPU buffer and is compiled only on architectures that call nmi_enter(). This is achieved by the new HAVE_NMI Kconfig flag. The are MN10300 and Xtensa architectures. We need to clean up NMI handling there first. Let's do it separately. The patch is heavily based on the draft from Peter Zijlstra, see https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/6/10/327 [arnd@arndb.de: printk-nmi: use %zu format string for size_t] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: min_t->min - all types are size_t here] Signed-off-by: Petr Mladek <pmladek@suse.com> Suggested-by: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Suggested-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Acked-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk> [arm part] Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Cc: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: David Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2016-05-18Merge tag 'gpio-v4.7-1' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of GPIO changes for kernel cycle v4.7: Core infrastructural changes: - Support for natively single-ended GPIO driver stages. This means that if the hardware has registers to configure open drain or open source configuration, we use that rather than (as we did before) try to emulate it by switching the line to an input to get high impedance. This is also documented throughly in Documentation/gpio/driver.txt for those of you who did not understand one word of what I just wrote. - Start to do away with the unnecessarily complex and unitelligible ARCH_REQUIRE_GPIOLIB and ARCH_WANT_OPTIONAL_GPIOLIB, another evolutional artifact from the time when the GPIO subsystem was unmaintained. Archs can now just select GPIOLIB and be done with it, cleanups to arches will trickle in for the next kernel. Some minor archs ACKed the changes immediately so these are included in this pull request. - Advancing the use of the data pointer inside the GPIO device for storing driver data by switching the PowerPC, Super-H Unicore and a few other subarches or subsystem drivers in ALSA SoC, Input, serial, SSB, staging etc to use it. - The initialization now reads the input/output state of the GPIO lines, so that each GPIO descriptor knows - if this callback is implemented - whether the line is input or output. This also reflects nicely in userspace "lsgpio". - It is now possible to name GPIO producer names, line names, from the device tree. (Platform data has been supported for a while). I bet we will get a similar mechanism for ACPI one of those days. This makes is possible to get sensible producer names for e.g. GPIO rails in "lsgpio" in userspace. New drivers: - New driver for the Loongson1. - The XLP driver now supports Broadcom Vulcan ARM64. - The IT87 driver now supports IT8620 and IT8628. - The PCA953X driver now supports Galileo Gen2. Driver improvements: - MCP23S08 was switched to use the gpiolib irqchip helpers and now also suppors level-triggered interrupts. - 74x164 and RCAR now supports the .set_multiple() callback - AMDPT was converted to use generic GPIO. - TC3589x, TPS65218, SX150X, F7188X, MENZ127, VX855, WM831X, WM8994 support the new single ended callback for open drain and in some cases open source. - Implement the .get_direction() callback for a few more drivers like PL061, Xgene. Cleanups: - Paul Gortmaker combed through the drivers and de-modularized those who are not really modules. - Move the GPIO poweroff DT bindings to the power subdir where they belong. - Rename gpio-generic.c to gpio-mmio.c, which is much more to the point. 2016-04-13dmaengine: dw: rename masters to reflect actual topologyAndy Shevchenko
The source and destination masters are reflecting buses or their layers to where the different devices can be connected. The patch changes the master names to reflect which one is related to which independently on the transfer direction. The outcome of the change is that the memory data width is now always limited by a data width of the master which is dedicated to communicate to memory. The patch will not break anything since all current users have the same data width for all masters. Though it would be nice to revisit avr32 platforms to check what is the actual hardware topology in use there. It seems that it has one bus and two masters on it as stated by Table 8-2, that's why everything works independently on the master in use. The purpose of the sequential patch is to fix the driver for configuration of more than one bus. The change is done in the assumption that src_master and dst_master are reflecting a connection to the memory and peripheral correspondently on avr32 and otherwise on the rest. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "This is the bulk of GPIO changes for kernel v4.6. There is quite a lot of interesting stuff going on. The patches to other subsystems and arch-wide are ACKed as far as possible, though I consider things like per-arch <asm/gpio.h> as essentially a part of the GPIO subsystem so it should not be needed. Core changes: - The gpio_chip is now a *real device*. Until now the gpio chips were just piggybacking the parent device or (gasp) floating in space outside of the device model. We now finally make GPIO chips devices. The gpio_chip will create a gpio_device which contains a struct device, and this gpio_device struct is kept private. Anything that needs to be kept private from the rest of the kernel will gradually be moved over to the gpio_device. - As a result of making the gpio_device a real device, we have added resource management, so devm_gpiochip_add_data() will cut down on overhead and reduce code lines. A huge slew of patches convert almost all drivers in the subsystem to use this. - Building on making the GPIO a real device, we add the first step of a new userspace ABI: the GPIO character device. We take small steps here, so we first add a pure *information* ABI and the tool "lsgpio" that will list all GPIO devices on the system and all lines on these devices. We can now discover GPIOs properly from userspace. We still have not come up with a way to actually *use* GPIOs from userspace. - To encourage people to use the character device for the future, we have it always-enabled when using GPIO. The old sysfs ABI is still opt-in (and can be used in parallel), but is marked as deprecated. We will keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it will not be extended to cover ever more use cases. Cleanup: - Bjorn Helgaas removed a whole slew of per-architecture <asm/gpio.h> includes. This dates back to when GPIO was an opt-in feature and no shared library even existed: just a header file with proper prototypes was provided and all semantics were up to the arch to implement. These patches make the GPIO chip even more a proper device and cleans out leftovers of the old in-kernel API here and there. Still some cruft is left but it's very little now. - There is still some clamping of return values for .get() going on, but we now return sane values in the vast majority of drivers and the errorpath is sanitized. Some patches for powerpc, blackfin and unicore still drop in. - We continue to switch the ARM, MIPS, blackfin, m68k local GPIO implementations to use gpiochip_add_data() and cut down on code lines. - MPC8xxx is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. - ATH79 is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. 2016-03-14avr32: fix asm operand constraint in cmpxchg()Mans Rullgard
If the 'old' operand to cmpxchg() is a constant wider than 21 bits, linking fails with a "relocation truncated to fit: R_AVR32_21S" error. Fix this by replacing the "i" constraint with "Ks21" which makes the compiler use a temporary register for out of range constants. 2016-03-14avr32: wire up copy_file_range syscallHans-Christian Egtvedt
This patch wires up the new copy_file_range syscall on AVR32. On AVR32, all parameters beyond the 5th are passed on the stack. System calls don't use the stack -- they borrow a callee-saved register instead. This means that syscalls that take 6 parameters must be called through a stub that pushes the last parameter on the stack. Signed-off-by: Hans-Christian Noren Egtvedt <egtvedt@samfundet.no>
2016-03-14ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. 2016-02-26net: Facility to report route quality of connected socketsTom Herbert
This patch add the SO_CNX_ADVICE socket option (setsockopt only). The purpose is to allow an application to give feedback to the kernel about the quality of the network path for a connected socket. The value argument indicates the type of quality report. For this initial patch the only supported advice is a value of 1 which indicates "bad path, please reroute"-- the action taken by the kernel is to call dst_negative_advice which will attempt to choose a different ECMP route, reset the TX hash for flow label and UDP source port in encapsulation, etc. This facility should be useful for connected UDP sockets where only the application can provide any feedback about path quality. It could also be useful for TCP applications that have additional knowledge about the path outside of the normal TCP control loop. Most arches have an asm/gpio.h that merely includes linux/gpio.h. The others select ARCH_HAVE_CUSTOM_GPIO_H, and when that's selected, linux/gpio.h includes asm/gpio.h. Therefore, code should include linux/gpio.h instead of including asm/gpio.h directly. Remove includes of asm/gpio.h, adding an include of linux/gpio.h when necessary. 2016-01-17Merge tag 'gpio-v4.5-1' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij: "Here is the bulk of GPIO changes for v4.5. Notably there are big refactorings mostly by myself, aimed at getting the gpio_chip into a shape that makes me believe I can proceed to preserve state for a proper userspace ABI (character device) that has already been proposed once, but resulted in the feedback that I need to go back and restructure stuff. So I've been restructuring stuff. On the way I ran into brokenness (return code from the get_value() callback) and had to fix it. Also, refactored generic GPIO to be simpler. Some of that is still waiting to trickle down from the subsystems all over the kernel that provide random gpio_chips, I've touched every single GPIO driver in the kernel now, oh man I didn't know I was responsible for so much... Apart from that we're churning along as usual. I took some effort to test and retest so it should merge nicely and we shook out a couple of bugs in -next. Infrastructural changes: - In struct gpio_chip, rename the .dev node to .parent to better reflect the fact that this is not the GPIO struct device abstraction. We will add that soon so this would be totallt confusing. - It was noted that the driver .get_value() callbacks was sometimes reporting negative -ERR values to the gpiolib core, expecting them to be propagated to consumer gpiod_get_value() and gpio_get_value() calls. This was not happening, so as there was a mess of drivers returning negative errors and some returning "anything else than zero" to indicate that a line was active. As some would have bit 31 set to indicate "line active" it clashed with negative error codes. This is fixed by the largeish series clamping values in all drivers with !!value to [0,1] and then augmenting the code to propagate error codes to consumers. (Includes some ACKed patches in other subsystems.) - Add a void *data pointer to struct gpio_chip. The container_of() design pattern is indeed very nice, but we want to reform the struct gpio_chip to be a non-volative, stateless business, and keep states internal to the gpiolib to be able to hold on to the state when adding a proper userspace ABI (character device) further down the road. To achieve this, drivers need a handle at the internal state that is not dependent on their struct gpio_chip() so we add gpiochip_add_data() and gpiochip_get_data() following the pattern of many other subsystems. All the "use gpiochip data pointer" patches transforms drivers to this scheme. - The Generic GPIO chip header has been merged into the general <linux/gpio/driver.h> header, and the custom header for that removed. Instead of having a separate mm_gpio_chip struct for these generic drivers, merge that into struct gpio_chip, simplifying the code and removing the need for separate and confusing includes. Misc improvements: - Stabilize the way GPIOs are looked up from the ACPI legacy specification. - Incremental driver features for PXA, PCA953X, Lantiq (patches from the OpenWRT community), RCAR, Zynq, PL061, 104-idi-48 New drivers: - Add a GPIO chip to the ALSA SoC AC97 driver. - Add a new Broadcom NSP SoC driver (this lands in the pinctrl dir, but the branch is merged here too to account for infrastructural changes). - The sx150x driver now supports the sx1502" * tag 'gpio-v4.5-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio: (220 commits) gpio: generic: make bgpio_pdata always visible gpiolib: fix chip order in gpio list gpio: mpc8xxx: Do not use gpiochip_get_data() in mpc8xxx_gpio_save_regs() gpio: mm-lantiq: Do not use gpiochip_get_data() in ltq_mm_save_regs() gpio: brcmstb: Allow building driver for BMIPS_GENERIC gpio: brcmstb: Set endian flags for big-endian MIPS gpio: moxart: fix build regression gpio: xilinx: Do not use gpiochip_get_data() in xgpio_save_regs() leds: pca9532: use gpiochip data pointer leds: tca6507: use gpiochip data pointer hid: cp2112: use gpiochip data pointer bcma: gpio: use gpiochip data pointer avr32: gpio: use gpiochip data pointer video: fbdev: via: use gpiochip data pointer gpio: pch: Optimize pch_gpio_get() Revert "pinctrl: lantiq: Implement gpio_chip.to_irq" pinctrl: nsp-gpio: use gpiochip data pointer pinctrl: vt8500-wmt: use gpiochip data pointer pinctrl: exynos5440: use gpiochip data pointer pinctrl: at91-pio4: use gpiochip data pointer ...

2015-11-19gpio: change member .dev to .parentLinus Walleij
The name .dev in a struct is normally reserved for a struct device that is let us say a superclass to the thing described by the struct. struct gpio_chip stands out by confusingly using a struct device *dev to point to the parent device (such as a platform_device) that represents the hardware. As we want to give gpio_chip:s real devices, this is not working. We need to rename this member to parent. This was done by two coccinelle scripts, I guess it is possible to combine them into one, but I don't know such stuff. They look like this: @@ struct gpio_chip *var; @@ -var->dev +var->parent and: @@ struct gpio_chip var; @@ -var.dev +var.parent and: @@ struct bgpio_chip *var; @@ -var->gc.dev +var->gc.parent Plus a few instances of bgpio that I couldn't figure out how to teach Coccinelle to rewrite. This patch hits all over the place, but I *strongly* prefer this solution to any piecemal approaches that just exercise patch mechanics all over the place. It mainly hits drivers/gpio and drivers/pinctrl which is my own backyard anyway. 2015-10-04Merge branch 'strscpy' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile Pull strscpy string copy function implementation from Chris Metcalf. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches. Use this in places where it makes sense, but don't do trivial patches to fix things that aren't actually known to be broken. * 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile: tile: use global strscpy() rather than private copy string: provide strscpy() Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures
