2012-10-09readahead: fault retry breaks mmap file read random detectionShaohua Li
.fault now can retry. The retry can break state machine of .fault. In filemap_fault, if page is miss, ra->mmap_miss is increased. In the second try, since the page is in page cache now, ra->mmap_miss is decreased. And these are done in one fault, so we can't detect random mmap file access. Add a new flag to indicate .fault is tried once. In the second try, skip ra->mmap_miss decreasing. The filemap_fault state machine is ok with it. I only tested x86, didn't test other archs, but looks the change for other archs is obvious, but who knows :) Signed-off-by: Shaohua Li <shaohua.li@fusionio.com> Cc: Rik van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Cc: Wu Fengguang <fengguang.wu@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

Pull Xtensa patchset from Chris Zankel: "The Xtensa tree has been broken for some time now, and this patchset brings it back to life. It has been part of the linux-next tree for some time. Most changes are inside the xtensa subdirectory; the other changes mostly add another rule to already existing #ifdefs to exclude Xtensa, where required. The only 'common' change is to add two more sections ('.xt.prop' and '.xt.lit') to the white list in modpost." * tag 'xtensa-next-20121008' of git://github.com/czankel/xtensa-linux: (27 commits) xtensa: Setup CROSS_COMPILE at the top xtensa: drop CONFIG_EMBEDDED_RAMDISK xtensa: fix TIOCGSERIAL and TIOCSSERIAL definitions xtensa: provide dummy gcc intrinsics xtensa: add missing symbol exports parport: disable for xtensa arch xtensa: rename MISC SR definition to avoid name clashes hisax: disable build for big-endian xtensa xtensa: fix CODA build xtensa: fix parallel make xtensa: ISS: drop unused io.c xtensa: ISS: exit simulator in case of halt or poweroff xtensa: ISS: change keyboard polling rate xtensa: ISS: add platform_pcibios_init xtensa: ISS: add dummy serial.h for ISS platform xtensa: change default platform clock frequency to 10MHz xtensa: add ARCH_WANT_OPTIONAL_GPIOLIB to xtensa config xtensa: set NO_IOPORT to 'n' by default xtensa: adopt generic io routines xtensa: fix ioremap ...
2012-10-09Merge tag 'asm-generic' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This has three changes for asm-generic that did not really fit into any other branch as normal asm-generic changes do. One is a fix for a build warning, the other two are more interesting: * A patch from Mark Brown to allow using the common clock infrastructure on all architectures, so we can use the clock API in architecture independent device drivers. * The UAPI split patches from David Howells for the asm-generic files. There are other architecture specific series that are going through the arch maintainer tree and that depend on this one. There may be a few small merge conflicts between Mark's patch and the following arch header file split patches. In each case the solution will be to keep the new "generic-y += clkdev.h" line, even if it ends up being the only line in the Kbuild file." * tag 'asm-generic' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: UAPI: (Scripted) Disintegrate include/asm-generic asm-generic: Add default clkdev.h asm-generic: xor: mark static functions as __maybe_unused
2012-10-05cross-arch: don't corrupt personality flags upon exec()Jiri Kosina
Historically, the top three bytes of personality have been used for things such as ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE, which made sense only for specific architectures. We now however have a flag there that is general no matter the architecture (UNAME26); generally we have to be careful to preserve the personality flags across exec(). This patch tries to fix all architectures that forcefully overwrite personality flags during exec() (ppc32 and s390 have been fixed recently by commits f9783ec862ea ("[S390] Do not clobber personality flags on exec") and 59e4c3a2fe9c ("powerpc/32: Don't clobber personality flags on exec") in a similar way already). 2012-10-04Merge branch 'disintegrate-asm-generic' of ↵Arnd Bergmann

Note that there are some fixup patches which are at the base of the branch aimed at you, plus all arches get the asm-generic branch merged in too. * 'disintegrate-asm-generic' of git://git.infradead.org/users/dhowells/linux-headers: UAPI: (Scripted) Disintegrate include/asm-generic UAPI: Fix conditional header installation handling (notably kvm_para.h on m68k) c6x: remove c6x signal.h UAPI: Split compound conditionals containing __KERNEL__ in Arm64 UAPI: Fix the guards on various asm/unistd.h files Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2012-10-04xtensa: Setup CROSS_COMPILE at the topGeert Uytterhoeven
CROSS_COMPILE must be setup before using e.g. cc-option (and a few other as-*, cc-*, ld-* macros), else they will check against the wrong compiler when cross-compiling, and may invoke the cross compiler with wrong or suboptimal compiler options. 2012-10-03xtensa: fix TIOCGSERIAL and TIOCSSERIAL definitionsMax Filippov
Put equivalent constants into TIOCGSERIAL and TIOCSSERIAL definitions: size subfield of these IOCTL codes is not used and no other architecture uses _IO* macros here. 2012-09-23xtensa: Add missing RCU idle APIs on idle loopFrederic Weisbecker
In the old times, the whole idle task was considered as an RCU quiescent state. But as RCU became more and more successful overtime, some RCU read side critical section have been added even in the code of some architectures idle tasks, for tracing for example. So nowadays, rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit() must be called by the architecture to tell RCU about the part in the idle loop that doesn't make use of rcu read side critical sections, typically the part that puts the CPU in low power mode. This is necessary for RCU to find the quiescent states in idle in order to complete grace periods. Add this missing pair of calls in the xtensa's idle loop. Reported-by: Paul E. If the SHMLBA definition for a native task differs from the definition for a compat task, the do_shmat() function would need to handle both. This patch introduces COMPAT_SHMLBA, which is used by the compat shmat syscall when calling the ipc code and allows architectures such as AArch64 (where the native SHMLBA is 64k but the compat (AArch32) definition is 16k) to provide the correct semantics for compat IPC system calls. 2012-07-31xtensa/mm/fault.c: port OOM changes to do_page_faultKautuk Consul
Commits d065bd810b6d ("mm: retry page fault when blocking on disk transfer") and 37b23e0525d3 ("x86,mm: make pagefault killable") introduced changes into the x86 pagefault handler for making the page fault handler retryable as well as killable. These changes reduce the mmap_sem hold time, which is crucial during OOM killer invocation. Port these changes to xtensa. 2012-06-28Remove useless wrappers of asm-generic/rmap.hPaul Bolle
xtensa has a header (in its include/asm directory) that is a thin wrapper around asm-generic/rmap.h. This wrapper is useless, since that header doesn't exist. It is also unused (no file includes asm/rmap.h). openrisc generates a similar header at build time (using a generic-y entry in include/asm/Kbuild). This generated header is useless and unused too. Remove this header and this generic-y entry. Signed-off-by: Paul Bolle <pebolle@tiscali.nl> Signed-off-by: Michal Marek <mmarek@suse.cz>
