2010-10-21smsc95xx: generate random MAC address once, not every ifupBernard Blackham
The smsc95xx driver currently generates a new random MAC address every time the interface is brought up. This makes it impossible to override using the standard `ifconfig hw ether` approach. Past patches tried to make the MAC address a module parameter or base it off the die ID, but it seems to me much simpler (and hopefully less controversial) to stick with the current random generation scheme, but allow the user to change the address. This patch does exactly that - it moves the random address generation from smsc95xx_reset() into smsc95xx_bind(), so that it is done once on module load, not on every ifup. Fixed formatting (tabs and line breaks). The TIOCGICOUNT device ioctl allows unprivileged users to read uninitialized stack memory, because the "reserved" member of the serial_icounter_struct struct declared on the stack in hso_get_count() is not altered or zeroed before being copied back to the user. 2010-09-10ipheth: remove incorrect devtype to WWANDan Williams
The 'wwan' devtype is meant for devices that require preconfiguration and *every* time setup before the ethernet interface can be used, like cellular modems which require a series of setup commands on serial ports or other mechanisms before the ethernet interface will handle packets. As ipheth only requires one-per-hotplug pairing setup with no preconfiguration (like APN, phone #, etc) and the network interface is usable at any time after that initial setup, remove the incorrect devtype wwan. 2010-09-08introduce cx82310_eth: Conexant CX82310-based ADSL router USB ethernet driverOndrej Zary
This patch introduces cx82310_eth driver - driver for USB ethernet port of ADSL routers based on Conexant CX82310 chips. Such routers usually have ethernet port(s) too which are bridged together with the USB ethernet port, allowing the USB-connected machine to communicate to the network (and also internet through the ADSL, of course). This is my first driver, so please check thoroughly. As there's no protocol documentation, it was done with usbsnoop dumps from Windows driver, some parts (the commands) inspired by cxacru driver and also other usbnet drivers. The driver passed my testing - some real work and also pings sized from 0 to 65507 B. The only problem I found is the ifconfig error counter. When I return 0 (or 1 but empty skb) from rx_fixup(), usbnet increases the error counter although it's not an error condition (because packets can cross URB boundaries). Maybe the usbnet should be fixed to allow rx_fixup() to return empty skbs (or some other value, e.g. 2)? The USB ID of my device is 0x0572:0xcb01 which conflicts with some ADSL modems using cxacru driver (they probably use the same chipset but simpler firmware). The modems seem to use bDeviceClass 0 and iProduct "ADSL USB MODEM", my router uses bDeviceClass 255 and iProduct "USB NET CARD". The driver matches only devices with class 255 and checks for the iProduct string during init. I already posted a patch for the cxacru driver to ignore these devices. 2010-08-17ethtool: Provide a default implementation of ethtool_ops::get_drvinfoBen Hutchings
The driver name and bus address for a net_device can normally be found through the driver model now. Instead of requiring drivers to provide this information redundantly through the ethtool_ops::get_drvinfo operation, use the driver model to do so if the driver does not define the operation. Since ETHTOOL_GDRVINFO no longer requires the driver to implement any operations, do not require net_device::ethtool_ops to be set either. 2010-08-10usbnet: rx_submit() should return an error code.David S. Miller
This patch makes rx_submit() return an error code, and makes some call sites that care check the return value. This is important because it lets us properly handle cases where the device isn't ready to handle URB submissions (e.g., when it is autosuspended under some drivers); previously, we would attempt and fail to submit URBs and reschedule ourselves to try and fail again. Driver checks received packet is too large in asix_rx_fixup() and fails if it is. Problem is that MTU might be set larger than 1500 and asix fails to work correctly with VLAN tagged packets. Some RNDIS devices don't respond on the control channel until polled on the status channel. In particular, this was reported to be the case for the 2Wire HomePortal 1000SW. This is roughly based on a patch by John Carr <john.carr@unrouted.co.uk> which is reported to be needed for use with some Windows Mobile devices and which is currently applied by Mandriva. This patch removes from drivers/net/ all the unnecessary return; statements that precede the last closing brace of void functions. It does not remove the returns that are immediately preceded by a label as gcc doesn't like that. It also does not remove null void functions with return. 2010-05-03dm9601: fix phy/eeprom write routinePeter Korsgaard
Use correct bit positions in DM_SHARED_CTRL register for writes. Michael Planes recently encountered a 'KY-RS9600 USB-LAN converter', which came with a driver CD containing a Linux driver. This driver turns out to be a copy of dm9601.c with symbols renamed and my copyright stripped. That aside, it did contain 1 functional change in dm_write_shared_word(), and after checking the datasheet the original value was indeed wrong (read versus write bits). On Michaels HW, this change bumps receive speed from ~30KB/s to ~900KB/s. On other devices the difference is less spectacular, but still significant (~30%). The following patch adds the initiation of the sync sequence to "sierra_net_bind()". If this step is omitted, the modem will never sync up with the host and it will not be possible to establish a data connection. 2010-04-30cdc_ether: Identify MBM devices by GUID in MDLM descriptorJonas Sjöquist
This patch removes vid/pid for Ericsson MBM devices from the whitelist set of devices. The MBM devices are instead identified by GUID. In order for cdc_ether to handle these devices the GUID in the MDLM descriptor is tested. All MBM devices currently handled by cdc_ether as well as future CDC Ethernet MBM devices can be identified by the GUID. This is the same solution used in Carl Nordbeck's mbm driver, http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-usb/2008/11/17/4141384/thread I post this as RFC to get feedback on however cdc_ether is the correct place to do the binding, or if it should be done in a separate driver, e.g. zaurus.
