2011-05-28hpfs: remove unnecessary dentry_unhash on rmdir, dir renameSage Weil
Hpfs has no problems with references to unlinked directories. We leave one dentry_unhash call in place, in hpfs_unlink's strange path where it tries to truncate a file because the disk is full. I'm not sure what the full story is there. CC: Mikulas Patocka <mikulas@artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz> Signed-off-by: Sage Weil <sage@newdream.net> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2011-05-26vfs: push dentry_unhash on rename_dir into file systemsSage Weil
Only a few file systems need this. Start by pushing it down into each rename method (except gfs2 and xfs) so that it can be dealt with on a per-fs basis. Acked-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Sage Weil <sage@newdream.net> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

Only a few file systems need this. Start by pushing it down into each fs rmdir method (except gfs2 and xfs) so it can be dealt with on a per-fs basis. 2011-05-26vfs: remove dget() from dentry_unhash()Sage Weil
This serves no useful purpose that I can discern. All callers (rename, rmdir) hold their own reference to the dentry. A quick audit of all file systems showed no relevant checks on the value of d_count in vfs_rmdir/vfs_rename_dir paths. 2011-03-02hpfs: remove the BKLArnd Bergmann
This removes the BKL in hpfs in a rather awful way, by making the code only work on uniprocessor systems without kernel preemption, as suggested by Andi Kleen. The HPFS code probably has close to zero remaining users on current kernels, all archeological uses of the file system can probably be done with the significant restrictions. The hpfs_lock/hpfs_unlock functions are left in the code, sincen Mikulas has indicated that he is still interested in fixing it in a better way. 2009-07-12headers: smp_lock.h reduxAlexey Dobriyan
* Remove smp_lock.h from files which don't need it (including some headers!) * Add smp_lock.h to files which do need it * Make smp_lock.h include conditional in hardirq.h It's needed only for one kernel_locked() usage which is under CONFIG_PREEMPT This will make hardirq.h inclusion cheaper for every PREEMPT=n config (which includes allmodconfig/allyesconfig, BTW) Signed-off-by: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2008-11-13CRED: Wrap task credential accesses in the HPFS filesystemDavid Howells
Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds. Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id(). Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id(). In some places it makes more sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be addressed by later patches. 2008-07-27[patch 05/14] hpfs: dont call permission()Miklos Szeredi
hpfs_unlink() calls permission() prior to truncating the file. HPFS doesn't define a .permission method, so replace with explicit call to generic_permission(). This is equivalent, except that devcgroup_inode_permission() and security_inode_permission() are not called. The truncation is just an implementation detail of the unlink, so these security checks are unnecessary. I suspect that even calling generic_permission() is unnecessary, since we shouldn't mind if the file isn't writable. But I leave that to the maintainer to decide. 2007-05-21Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). Cross-compile tested on all arm defconfigs, all mips defconfigs, all powerpc defconfigs, alpha alpha-up arm i386 i386-up i386-defconfig i386-allnoconfig ia64 ia64-up m68k mips parisc parisc-up powerpc powerpc-up s390 s390-up sparc sparc-up sparc64 sparc64-up um-x86_64 x86_64 x86_64-up x86_64-defconfig x86_64-allnoconfig as well as my two usual configs. 2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct inode_operations const 2Arjan van de Ven
Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. 2006-10-01[PATCH] r/o bind mounts: monitor zeroing of i_nlinkDave Hansen
Some filesystems, instead of simply decrementing i_nlink, simply zero it during an unlink operation. We need to catch these in addition to the decrement operations. 2006-10-01[PATCH] r/o bind mount prepwork: inc_nlink() helperDave Hansen

2006-10-01[PATCH] r/o bind mounts: unlink: monitor i_nlinkDave Hansen
When a filesystem decrements i_nlink to zero, it means that a write must be performed in order to drop the inode from the filesystem. We're shortly going to have keep filesystems from being remounted r/o between the time that this i_nlink decrement and that write occurs. So, add a little helper function to do the decrements. We'll tie into it in a bit to note when i_nlink hits zero. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
