2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2016-01-15kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcgVladimir Davydov
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). 2015-12-09replace ->follow_link() with new method that could stay in RCU modeAl Viro
new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences are: * inode and dentry are passed separately * might be called both in RCU and non-RCU mode; the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry. * when called that way it isn't allowed to block and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called in non-RCU mode. It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances converted. Conversion isn't hard; said that, so far very few instances do not immediately bail out when called in RCU mode. 2015-11-14xattr handlers: Pass handler to operations instead of flagsAndreas Gruenbacher

2014-03-13fs: push sync_filesystem() down to the file system's remount_fs()Theodore Ts'o
Previously, the no-op "mount -o mount /dev/xxx" operation when the file system is already mounted read-write causes an implied, unconditional syncfs(). This seems pretty stupid, and it's certainly documented or guaraunteed to do this, nor is it particularly useful, except in the case where the file system was mounted rw and is getting remounted read-only. However, it's possible that there might be some file systems that are actually depending on this behavior. In most file systems, it's probably fine to only call sync_filesystem() when transitioning from read-write to read-only, and there are some file systems where this is not needed at all (for example, for a pseudo-filesystem or something like romfs). 2013-11-20Squashfs: Directly decompress into the page cache for file dataPhillip Lougher
This introduces an implementation of squashfs_readpage_block() that directly decompresses into the page cache. This uses the previously added page handler abstraction to push down the necessary kmap_atomic/kunmap_atomic operations on the page cache buffers into the decompressors. This enables direct copying into the page cache without using the slow kmap/kunmap calls. The code detects when multiple threads are racing in squashfs_readpage() to decompress the same block, and avoids this regression by falling back to using an intermediate buffer. This patch enhances the performance of Squashfs significantly when multiple processes are accessing the filesystem simultaneously because it not only reduces memcopying, but it more importantly eliminates the lock contention on the intermediate buffer. Using single-thread decompression. dd if=file1 of=/dev/null bs=4096 & dd if=file2 of=/dev/null bs=4096 & dd if=file3 of=/dev/null bs=4096 & dd if=file4 of=/dev/null bs=4096 Before: 629145600 bytes (629 MB) copied, 45.8046 s, 13.7 MB/s After: 629145600 bytes (629 MB) copied, 9.29414 s, 67.7 MB/s Signed-off-by: Phillip Lougher <phillip@squashfs.org.uk> Reviewed-by: Minchan Kim <minchan@kernel.org>

2013-11-20Squashfs: Generalise paging handling in the decompressorsPhillip Lougher
Further generalise the decompressors by adding a page handler abstraction. This adds helpers to allow the decompressors to access and process the output buffers in an implementation independant manner. This allows different types of output buffer to be passed to the decompressors, with the implementation specific aspects handled at decompression time, but without the knowledge being held in the decompressor wrapper code. This will allow the decompressors to handle Squashfs cache buffers, and page cache pages. This patch adds the abstraction and an implementation for the caches. 2013-11-20Squashfs: Refactor decompressor interface and codePhillip Lougher
The decompressor interface and code was written from the point of view of single-threaded operation. In doing so it mixed a lot of single-threaded implementation specific aspects into the decompressor code and elsewhere which makes it difficult to seamlessly support multiple different decompressor implementations. This patch does the following: 1. It removes compressor_options parsing from the decompressor init() function. This allows the decompressor init() function to be dynamically called to instantiate multiple decompressors, without the compressor options needing to be read and parsed each time. 2. It moves threading and all sleeping operations out of the decompressors. In doing so, it makes the decompressors non-blocking wrappers which only deal with interfacing with the decompressor implementation. 3. It splits decompressor.[ch] into decompressor generic functions in decompressor.[ch], and moves the single threaded decompressor implementation into decompressor_single.c. The result of this patch is Squashfs should now be able to support multiple decompressors by adding new decompressor_xxx.c files with specialised implementations of the functions in decompressor_single.c Signed-off-by: Phillip Lougher <phillip@squashfs.org.uk> Reviewed-by: Minchan Kim <minchan@kernel.org>

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull vfs update from Al Viro: - big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of that is moved to fs/file.c (BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." 2012-10-03fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystemsKirill A. Shutemov
There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every deactivate_locked_super(). We only need to make sure that all delayed rcu free inodes are flushed before we destroy related cache. Removing rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() affects some fast paths. E.g. on my machine exit_group() of a last process in IPC namespace takes 0.07538s. rcu_barrier() takes 0.05188s of that time. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2012-07-14stop passing nameidata to ->lookup()Al Viro
Just the flags; only NFS cares even about that, but there are legitimate uses for such argument. And getting rid of that completely would require splitting ->lookup() into a couple of methods (at least), so let's leave that alone for now... Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
