2014-07-10tty: Remove tty_hung_up_p() tests from tty drivers' open()Peter Hurley
Since at least before 2.6.30, it has not been possible to observe a hung up file pointer in a tty driver's open() method unless/until the driver open() releases the tty_lock() (eg., before blocking). This is because tty_open() adds the file pointer while holding the tty_lock() _and_ doesn't release the lock until after calling the tty driver's open() method. [ Before tty_lock(), this was lock_kernel(). ] Since __tty_hangup() first waits on the tty_lock() before enumerating and hanging up the open file pointers, either __tty_hangup() will wait for the tty_lock() or tty_open() will not yet have added the file pointer. For example, CPU 0 | CPU 1 | tty_open | __tty_hangup .. | .. tty_lock | .. tty_reopen | tty_lock / blocks .. | tty_add_file(tty, filp) | .. | tty->ops->open(tty, filp) | tty_port_open | tty_port_block_til_ready | .. | while (1) | .. | tty_unlock | / unblocks schedule | for each filp on tty->tty_files | f_ops = tty_hung_up_fops; | .. | tty_unlock tty_lock | .. | tty_unlock | Note that since tty_port_block_til_ready() and similar drop the tty_lock while blocking, when woken, the file pointer must then be tested for having been hung up. Also, fix bit-rotted drivers that used extra_count to track the port->count bump. CC: Mikael Starvik <starvik@axis.com> CC: Samuel Ortiz <samuel@sortiz.org> CC: "David S. 2014-01-19net: add build-time checks for msg->msg_name sizeSteffen Hurrle
This is a follow-up patch to f3d3342602f8bc ("net: rework recvmsg handler msg_name and msg_namelen logic"). DECLARE_SOCKADDR validates that the structure we use for writing the name information to is not larger than the buffer which is reserved for msg->msg_name (which is 128 bytes). 2013-11-21net: rework recvmsg handler msg_name and msg_namelen logicHannes Frederic Sowa
This patch now always passes msg->msg_namelen as 0. recvmsg handlers must set msg_namelen to the proper size <= sizeof(struct sockaddr_storage) to return msg_name to the user. This prevents numerous uninitialized memory leaks we had in the recvmsg handlers and makes it harder for new code to accidentally leak uninitialized memory. Optimize for the case recvfrom is called with NULL as address. We don't need to copy the address at all, so set it to NULL before invoking the recvmsg handler. We can do so, because all the recvmsg handlers must cope with the case a plain read() is called on them. read() also sets msg_name to NULL. Also document these changes in include/linux/net.h as suggested by David Miller. Changes since RFC: Set msg->msg_name = NULL if user specified a NULL in msg_name but had a non-null msg_namelen in verify_iovec/verify_compat_iovec. This doesn't affect sendto as it would bail out earlier while trying to copy-in the address. It also more naturally reflects the logic by the callers of verify_iovec. With this change in place I could remove " if (!uaddr || msg_sys->msg_namelen == 0) msg->msg_name = NULL ". This change does not alter the user visible error logic as we ignore msg_namelen as long as msg_name is NULL. Also remove two unnecessary curly brackets in ___sys_recvmsg and change comments to netdev style. 2013-11-19genetlink: only pass array to genl_register_family_with_ops()Johannes Berg
As suggested by David Miller, make genl_register_family_with_ops() a macro and pass only the array, evaluating ARRAY_SIZE() in the macro, this is a little safer. The openvswitch has some indirection, assing ops/n_ops directly in that code. This might ultimately just assign the pointers in the family initializations, saving the struct genl_family_and_ops and code (once mcast groups are handled differently.) 2013-11-13Merge git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-nextLinus Torvalds
Pull networking updates from David Miller: 1) The addition of nftables. No longer will we need protocol aware firewall filtering modules, it can all live in userspace. At the core of nftables is a, for lack of a better term, virtual machine that executes byte codes to inspect packet or metadata (arriving interface index, etc.) and make verdict decisions. Besides support for loading packet contents and comparing them, the interpreter supports lookups in various datastructures as fundamental operations. For example sets are supports, and therefore one could create a set of whitelist IP address entries which have ACCEPT verdicts attached to them, and use the appropriate byte codes to do such lookups. Since the interpreted code is composed in userspace, userspace can do things like optimize things before giving it to the kernel. Another major improvement is the capability of atomically updating portions of the ruleset. In the existing netfilter implementation, one has to update the entire rule set in order to make a change and this is very expensive. Userspace tools exist to create nftables rules using existing netfilter rule sets, but both kernel implementations will need to co-exist for quite some time as we transition from the old to the new stuff. Kudos to Patrick McHardy, Pablo Neira Ayuso, and others who have worked so hard on this. 2) Daniel Borkmann and Hannes Frederic Sowa made several improvements to our pseudo-random number generator, mostly used for things like UDP port randomization and netfitler, amongst other things. In particular the taus88 generater is updated to taus113, and test cases are added. 3) Support 64-bit rates in HTB and TBF schedulers, from Eric Dumazet and Yang Yingliang. 4) Add support for new 577xx tigon3 chips to tg3 driver, from Nithin Sujir. 5) Fix two fatal flaws in TCP dynamic right sizing, from Eric Dumazet, Neal Cardwell, and Yuchung Cheng. 6) Allow IP_TOS and IP_TTL to be specified in sendmsg() ancillary control message data, much like other socket option attributes. From Francesco Fusco. 7) Allow applications to specify a cap on the rate computed automatically by the kernel for pacing flows, via a new SO_MAX_PACING_RATE socket option. From Eric Dumazet. 8) Make the initial autotuned send buffer sizing in TCP more closely reflect actual needs, from Eric Dumazet. 9) Currently early socket demux only happens for TCP sockets, but we can do it for connected UDP sockets too. Implementation from Shawn Bohrer. 10) Refactor inet socket demux with the goal of improving hash demux performance for listening sockets. With the main goals being able to use RCU lookups on even request sockets, and eliminating the listening lock contention. From Eric Dumazet. 11) The bonding layer has many demuxes in it's fast path, and an RCU conversion was started back in 3.11, several changes here extend the RCU usage to even more locations. From Ding Tianhong and Wang Yufen, based upon suggestions by Nikolay Aleksandrov and Veaceslav Falico. 12) Allow stackability of segmentation offloads to, in particular, allow segmentation offloading over tunnels. From Eric Dumazet. 13) Significantly improve the handling of secret keys we input into the various hash functions in the inet hashtables, TCP fast open, as well as syncookies. From Hannes Frederic Sowa. The key fundamental operation is "net_get_random_once()" which uses static keys. Hannes even extended this to ipv4/ipv6 fragmentation handling and our generic flow dissector. 14) The generic driver layer takes care now to set the driver data to NULL on device removal, so it's no longer necessary for drivers to explicitly set it to NULL any more. Many drivers have been cleaned up in this way, from Jingoo Han. 15) Add a BPF based packet scheduler classifier, from Daniel Borkmann. 16) Improve CRC32 interfaces and generic SKB checksum iterators so that SCTP's checksumming can more cleanly be handled. Also from Daniel Borkmann. 17) Add a new PMTU discovery mode, IP_PMTUDISC_INTERFACE, which forces using the interface MTU value. This helps avoid PMTU attacks, particularly on DNS servers. From Hannes Frederic Sowa. 18) Use generic XPS for transmit queue steering rather than internal (re-)implementation in virtio-net. There are a mix of function prototypes with and without extern in the kernel sources. Standardize on not using extern for function prototypes. 'discovery->data.info' length is 22, NICKNAME_MAX_LEN is 21, so the strncpy() will always left the last byte of 'discovery->data.info' uninitialized. When 'text' length is longer than 21 (NICKNAME_MAX_LEN), if still left the last byte of 'discovery->data.info' uninitialized, the next strlen() will cause issue. Also 'discovery->data' is 'struct irda_device_info' which defined in "include/uapi/...", it may copy to user mode, so need whole initialized. So we're safe to use GFP_KERNEL here instead of GFP_ATOMIC. Signed-off-by: Mathias Krause <minipli@googlemail.com> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: David S. 2013-04-08irda: use GFP_KERNEL in irda_connect_response()Mathias Krause
The only call site of irda_connect_response() is irda_accept() -- a function called from user context only. Therefore it has no need for GFP_ATOMIC. Signed-off-by: Mathias Krause <minipli@googlemail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2013-04-07irda: Fix missing msg_namelen update in irda_recvmsg_dgram()Mathias Krause
The current code does not fill the msg_name member in case it is set. It also does not set the msg_namelen member to 0 and therefore makes net/socket.c leak the local, uninitialized sockaddr_storage variable to userland -- 128 bytes of kernel stack memory. Fix that by simply setting msg_namelen to 0 as obviously nobody cared about irda_recvmsg_dgram() not filling the msg_name in case it was set. 2013-03-18TTY: add tty_port_tty_hangup helperJiri Slaby
It allows for cleaning up on a considerable amount of places. They did port_get, hangup, kref_put. Now the only thing needed is to call tty_port_tty_hangup which does exactly that. And they can also decide whether to consider CLOCAL or completely ignore that. Signed-off-by: Jiri Slaby <jslaby@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2013-03-06net/irda: Use barrier to set task statePeter Hurley
Without a memory and compiler barrier, the task state change can migrate relative to the condition testing in a blocking loop. However, the task state change must be visible across all cpus prior to testing those conditions. Failing to do this can result in the familiar 'lost wakeup' and this task will hang until killed. 2013-01-28irda: buffer overflow in irnet_ctrl_read()Dan Carpenter
The comments here say that the /* Max event is 61 char */ but in 2003 we changed the event format and now the max event size is 75. The longest event is: "Discovered %08x (%s) behind %08x {hints %02X-%02X}\n", 12345678901 23 456789012 34567890 1 2 3 +8 +21 +8 +2 +2 +1 = 75 characters. There was a check to return -EOVERFLOW if the user gave us a "count" value that was less than 64. Raising it to 75 might break backwards compatability. Instead I removed the check and now it returns a truncated string if "count" is too low. Signed-off-by: Dan Carpenter <dan.carpenter@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2013-01-19tty: Added a CONFIG_TTY option to allow removal of TTYJoe Millenbach
The option allows you to remove TTY and compile without errors. This saves space on systems that won't support TTY interfaces anyway. bloat-o-meter output is below. The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on TTY" to various serial devices and similar drivers that require the TTY layer. Ideally, these dependencies would occur on a common intermediate symbol such as SERIO, but most drivers "select SERIO" rather than "depends on SERIO", and "select" does not respect dependencies. bloat-o-meter output comparing our previous minimal to new minimal by removing TTY. The list is filtered to not show removed entries with awk '$3 != "-"' as the list was very long. add/remove: 0/226 grow/shrink: 2/14 up/down: 6/-35356 (-35350) function old new delta chr_dev_init 166 170 +4 allow_signal 80 82 +2 static.__warned 143 142 -1 disallow_signal 63 62 -1 __set_special_pids 95 94 -1 unregister_console 126 121 -5 start_kernel 546 541 -5 register_console 593 588 -5 copy_from_user 45 40 -5 sys_setsid 128 120 -8 sys_vhangup 32 19 -13 do_exit 1543 1526 -17 bitmap_zero 60 40 -20 arch_local_irq_save 137 117 -20 release_task 674 652 -22 static.spin_unlock_irqrestore 308 260 -48 Signed-off-by: Joe Millenbach <jmillenbach@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Jamey Sharp <jamey@minilop.net> Reviewed-by: Josh Triplett <josh@joshtriplett.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2013-01-16TTY: switch tty_flip_buffer_pushJiri Slaby
Now, we start converting tty buffer functions to actually use tty_port. This will allow us to get rid of the need of tty in many call sites. Only tty_port will needed and hence no more tty_port_tty_get in those paths. Now, the one where most of tty_port_tty_get gets removed: tty_flip_buffer_push. IOW we also closed all the races in drivers not using tty_port_tty_get at all yet. Also we move tty_flip_buffer_push declaration from include/linux/tty.h to include/linux/tty_flip.h to all others while we are changing it anyway. 2013-01-16TTY: move low_latency to tty_portJiri Slaby
