2012-10-04perf diff: Removing the total_period argument from output codeJiri Olsa
The total_period is available in struct hists data via the 'struct hist_entry::hists' pointer. There's no need to carry it through the output code path. Removing 'struct perf_hpp::total_period' pointer, because it's no longer needed. 2012-10-04perf tool: Add hpp interface to enable/disable hpp columnJiri Olsa
Adding perf_hpp__column_enable function to enable/disable hists column and removing diff command specific stuff 'need_pair and show_displacement' from hpp code. The diff command now enables/disables columns separately according to the user arguments. This will be helpful in future patches where more columns are added into diff output. 2012-10-04perf hists: Separate overhead and baseline columnsJiri Olsa
Currently the overhead and baseline columns are handled within single function and the distinction is made by 'baseline hists' pointer passed by 'struct perf_hpp::ptr'. Since hists pointer is now part of each hist_entry, it's possible to locate paired hists pointer directly from the passed struct hist_entry pointer. Also separating those 2 columns makes the code more obvious. 2012-10-04perf diff: Refactor diff displacement possition infoJiri Olsa
Moving the position calculation into the diff command, so the position as prepared inside struct hist_entry data and there's no need to compute in the output display path. Removing 'displacement' from struct perf_hpp as it is no longer needed. For building perf without gtk+2, we can set NO_GTK2=1 as a argument of make. It then defines NO_GTK2_SUPPORT macro for C code to do the proper handling. However it usually used in a negative semantics - e.g. #ifndef - so we saw double negations which can be misleading. Convert it to a positive form to make it more readable. 2012-09-11perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variablesIrina Tirdea
perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused. 2012-09-08perf hists: Introduce perf_hpp for hist period printingNamhyung Kim
Current hist print functions are messy because it has to consider many of command line options and the code doing that is scattered around to places. So when someone wants to add an option to manipulate the hist output it'd very easy to miss to update all of them in sync. And things getting worse as more options/features are added continuously. So I'd like to refactor them using hpp formats and move common code to ui/hist.c in order to make it easy to maintain and to add new features. This patch adds a simple GTK2-based browser to 'perf report' that's based on the TTY-based browser in builtin-report.c. To launch "perf report" using the new GTK interface just type: $ perf report --gtk The interface is somewhat limited in features at the moment: - No callgraph support - No KVM guest profiling support - No color coding for percentages - No sorting from the UI - ..and many, many more! That said, I think this patch a reasonable start to build future features on. Unresolved symbols not show, limitation that came from the old "KernelTop" codebase, to solve it we would need to do changes that would make sym_entry have most of the hist_entry fields. 2. By using a mutex just for inserting and rotating two hist_entry rb trees, so that when sorting we can get the last batch of entries created from the ring buffer, merge it with whatever we have processed so far and show the output while new entries are being added. The 'report' tool continues, for now, to do it without threading, but will use this in the future to allow visualization of results in long perf.data sessions while the entries are being processed. The new 'top' tool will be the first user. 2011-01-22perf callchain: Feed callchains into a cursorFrederic Weisbecker
The callchains are fed with an array of a fixed size. As a result we iterate over each callchains three times: - 1st to resolve symbols - 2nd to filter out context boundaries - 3rd for the insertion into the tree This also involves some pairs of memory allocation/deallocation everytime we insert a callchain, for the filtered out array of addresses and for the array of symbols that comes along. Instead, feed the callchains through a linked list with persistent allocations. It brings several pros like: - Merge the 1st and 2nd iterations in one. That was possible before but in a way that would involve allocating an array slightly taller than necessary because we don't know in advance the number of context boundaries to filter out. - Much lesser allocations/deallocations. The linked list keeps persistent empty entries for the next usages and is extendable at will. - Makes it easier for multiple sources of callchains to feed a stacktrace together. This is deemed to pave the way for cfi based callchains wherein traditional frame pointer based kernel stacktraces will precede cfi based user ones, producing an overall callchain which size is hardly predictable. This requirement makes the static array obsolete and makes a linked list based iterator a much more flexible fit. Basic testing on a big perf file containing callchains (~ 176 MB) has shown a throughput gain of about 11% with perf report. At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already parsed. This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu, timestamp) just after before every event. Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid callchains, warning the user about it if it happens. There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type, that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be removed. The hists__tty_browse_tree function was created with the loop to print all events, and its equivalent, hists__tui_browse_tree, was created in a similar fashion, where it is possible to switch among the multiple events, if present, using TAB to go the next event, and shift+TAB (UNTAB) to go to the previous. The report TUI now shows as the window title the name of the event and a leak was fixed wrt pstacks. Number of samples is meaningless after we switched to auto-freq, so report the number of events, i.e. not the sum of the different periods, but the number PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE emitted by the kernel. While doing this I noticed that naming "count" to the sum of all the event periods can be confusing, so rename it to .period, just like in struct sample.data, so that we become more consistent. This helps with the next step, that was to record in struct hist_entry the number of sample events for each instance, we need that because we use it to generate the number of events when applying filters to the tree of hist entries like it is being done in the TUI report browser. The events_stats.total field is too generic, rename it to .total_period, and also add a comment explaining that it is the sum of all the .period fields in samples, that is needed because we use auto-freq to avoid sampling artifacts. Ditto for events_stats.lost, that is the sum of all lost_event.lost fields, i.e. the number of events the kernel dropped. Looking at the users, builtin-sched.c can make use of these fields and stop doing it again.
